How full is your marina ?

steve are you a berth holder in Dean and Reddyhoff as I am because when speaking to Neil the other week they have no free berths for anything above 40ft and are thinking of taking some fingers out of the smaller berths and making way for bigger boats as they just don't have any space, there was 1 free berth on D pontoon next to my old berth and 3 people wanted it and it was 1st come 1st served that berth went the same weekend

No I'm on the north Quay pontoons. Now that we're going to lose the car parks by the town bridge I am thinking of moving to the D&R pontoons.

I think the bulk of empty berths are below the 10m length range, I guess there's not enough demand for the smaller berths, hence why our pontoons have just been adapted to take larger craft! And from what you say also D&R are going to follow suit

I understand from a reliable source that Mercury is only at 60%, with the message from on high in MDL to fill it up, but no deals apparently.

Foulkes is rammed but as their rates are about 60% those at Mercury just for passing under two bridges hardly surprising really. The bridges keep the raggie riff raff at bay too.

Yes Foulkes is "rammed" as Trevor states, I think I had the last berth going. Its side on to the river flow which makes is either dead easy to drift away or exciting when returning with a rising spring tide.

Steady on with the "raggies rif raff" Trev, you were once a signed up member I recall.......

Having just bought a Targa 47 in Weymouth i am planning on keeping her there so sounds like i need to firm up on berthing for April onwards if there is a real shortage of larger berths

cheers

Shamrock Quay, the same, looks empty, especially as the fingers are removed for dredging. Waiting list for over 12 metres.
I was told that there has been less demand for sub 10 metre as Dry-berthing has become so popular.

by the end of last year Mercury seemed pretty full, busier than I have seen it for many years. However this will be due to "Freedom berthing", so they may well have no berths free, yet only have 60% occupancy. The other 40% are long term visitors from other (probably cheaper..... grrrr) MDL marinas, but these obviously not credited to Mercury's occupancy. I just hope the likes of premier continue doing "deals", as that's a major contributing factor that will keep berthing costs down at MDL.

When you say long term visitors are they allowing people to stay over the 30 days that are allowed as part of freedom berthing package ?

they don't like it, they make them move around the marina and if they leave their berth to go out they insist they call up on their return to check availability and be given a new berth.. trouble is the difference in price from say Shamrock to Mercury is nearly £2k for a 10m boat & that difference goes up the bigger you are. Quite understandably some folk think the nuisance is worth it. I don't, but it pee's me off that some folk are working the system..

Why don't they just charge day rates when people go over the "freedom" threshold?

When I visited Bangor (NI) marina the summer before last it was tumbleweed time. I reckon that around half the berths were empty, and the westernmost pontoon, nearest the promenade, were practically deserted. Carrickfergus was a lot fuller.

MDL's USP is flexibility and they should continue to work on that feature of the offering so there is no system to work

Humm, i can see the threads now when they put their prices to the level of their most expensive marina so there is price parity across their marinas.

Taking the point that Firefly makes further some of their marinas have considerably lower per meter berthing rates and are (or were based on last information) on over 100 % occupancy for exactly the reason suggested....

I wonder how it makes their staff feel, especially if management put the marinas up against each other for occupancy level results / new berth holders with rewards attached...

My current location, Canet en Roussillon has a waiting list. There is a berth about to become free as I am moving to Roses in Spain. In Roses I took an annual rental there - one of two free berths for rent in the "all weather" part of the port.

Around the outside, there is a lot of free space, but this is not recommended during winter. There are some berths free for annual rental in Port Vell, Barcelona if any one is interested.

Sshh ! None so pure as the purified.

Besides the popular marinas down river, Port Hamble in particular, are dominated by yacht charter firms. You definitely do not want to berth near these ids in yots.
