StellaGirl, iam not to sure how much sailing you have done, but you will find that you will often get better swells on entrance/exit of the solent.

Big waves in deep water
big waves move to shallow water (solent)
Big waves "compress" and move faster
=== swells....swells ...swells..

tome really knows his stuff, you can not doubt him, if he says it's possible then it is.

pics will be coming to prove what happens this weekend, might be 4 knots, might be 14, who knows

Thanks for the compliment, but in truth I've done very little racing and am lazy when it comes to kites. StellaGirl sounds like she can hold her own on this!

Cheers

WARNING! Thread hijack

I saw a consistent 6.5kts on the GPS on a broad reach off Gilkicker. It went up to 6.7 kts for several seconds in a gust Is this a record for a Snapdragon 24?

By the way, the subsequent broach was surprisingly gentle. Very definite, but very ladylike.

my opinion...

Simon,

In answer to your questions, I have done a fair bit of sailing including surfing down waves mid Atlantic which is why I asked the question about where you would be doing this.

I am fully aware of the theory and practise associated with tides, depth, swell etc. I have a pretty good knowledge of the Solent having sailed an average 3 - 4 days a week there over the last 2 years.
Being taught my Solent racing tactics by someone from a well known and respected sailmakers has also given me a few insights.... .in fact the fastest boat speed I have recorded was in the Solent (boat speed NOT GPS).

I asked about your crew purely from experience of flying a Code 2 in 30kts gusting higher. We had an experienced helm but still broached twice. Plan your drops well. If you mess your drop up you may well not have a kite anymore….

This post isn’t to show off what I "think" I know but to state that everyone, based on their own knowledge and experience can have a different opinion.
I am not disagreeing with Tome, I am not disagreeing with anyone at all, but you ask for an opinion on this forum you should expect varied answers.

Chill stella, i know you are more experienced than me. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
No offence to you, your cool.
Sometimes i hate these boards as they make u look like someone your not.
so come on then, what speed do u think i can acheive this weekend?
depends on wind really, but it should be ok.
I will of course record/photo GPS and log.

U ever done a death roll yet?

Re: GPS figure doesn\'t count!

Death roll coming up to Bembridge ledge during RTI race.....we went to gybe and bow man had a disagreement with the pole and it won, lucky he didnt lose all his teeth actually but there was a bit of blood. He went very yellow as he lay on the deck.....
one and only time though

Try and get a sail on a Mini Transat boat in a breeze, 20knots is more than possible! The best sailing fun I have had in years. My mate Jake is hoping to relaunch his in the very near future.
