The mission for this season is to see how far i can push my yacht, safely of course.

I want to set a record for my boat speed downwind
check her out swedish lady
specs here in swedish but you will understand.

my yacht surveyor reckons 16 knots, yes 16 knots.
I am prepared to put my kite up in a high f5 as i should have a good crew for this season.

what speed do you think?

16 knots could only be achieved by planing or, intermittently, by surfing. you'll need fairly flat sections aft and light displacement to get onto the plane, plus a fair bit of nerve. by no means impossible.

I reckon I've sailed down wind in the Pentland Firth with approx 10 knots of tide so managed 20 knots <smirk>

In the write up for my Dehler 31 it states planes at up to 17 kn. I did not beleive it until comming into Bologne this summer in a F8. 3 Reefs and a furled jib and 15 knts + on the log( after that did have to concentrate on steering ). The sensation of surfing down the waves is great .
It certainly proves all the gear.
Have fun.

I have 4 professional crew, all yachtmasters and 3 sail full time as professionals (they get paid for teaching)
I also have 2 other crew who are awesome on the kite.
I might give it a go this weekend, however we want 25 knots +, but we can see, should i take a picture of the GPS?

I reckon 15 exactly, she's got quite bulgy underwater sections and no nice planing platform so it'd have to be an almighty wave to get anything higher /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

15knots - not a bad guess i reckon, she is very narrow so it should help.
My money is on 15 knots, i dont think she will plane due to the design, but she is ever so narrow.
I have just had a look at my kite "fff me, thats big"

In the summer i will upload an mpeg of us.

I was on a Bennetau one tonner during Cowes week when the skipper decided to raise the kite in 30+ knots of wind. Put the fear of god up us, but we went on to win the race surfing downwind at up to 20 knots!

Re: How fast downwind?? Hull Shape and Sea/Wind Conditions

Depends very much on the above.

Barracudas are just like overgrown Lasers so get on the plane at around 12kts

I had her at over 16kts in a bit of a blow with 2 reefs going down channel before the mainsheet boom fitting failed, rigging was vibrating, sea roaring past down below etc - hairy-lost my bottle and retired to get pissed in the nearest French bar.

Previous owner used to take her up to 22kts in races but he had crew of 12+ gorillas on

Would have thought you could get to 16kts with enough rag up.

I'll take a pic of the gps, i'll reset the record highest speed to 0, then see what we can do. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

GPS figure doesn\'t count!

Because it will include the tide (Springs this weekend means a lot of tide in the Solent) and because a faulty GPS position could give a false momentary speed anyway. We had 16kts in Alderney race this year with a Boatspeed of just 6kts, we have also managed 16.7kts Boatspeed which with the 9kts of Alderney Race would have given 25.7kts SOG, totally irrelevant. We also managed 75kts backwards in our old boat SOG, as read from Decca in a thunderstorm.

So pics please of the LOG reading of Waterspeed, nothing else counts!

Re: GPS figure doesn\'t count!

I've had 14knots of tide in the Alderney Race, so if I give you that and you add it to your 16.7kn boatspeed your cooking on gas;-) travelling at 30.7knts .. in fact you could pick a mooring rope out of your locker and call it warp speed
