I have a 35 gallon tank on my Sabre 27 which has a Yanmar YSE 12 hp diesel engine.

How many hours of running would you estimate 35 gasl equals??

I know this will depend on revs etc - but assuming 'average revs'.

Cheers

Mike

Are you sure you have 35 gallons most Sabres have about 12 gallons.

Consumption of the YSB 12 is about 3-4 hours per gallon at 4 knots say 12-16 NM per gallon.

I have a YSE 12 on my boat (ufo 31 with folding prop) and when I bought her the sales blurb said 3/4 hrs per gallon. I have found that running at about two thirds throttle I get roughly 8/10hrs per gallon, this gives me a speed through the water of 5 or a bit more knots. Maybe the quoted figures are for full throttle????

I would be amazed if a 12 hp uses as much as 3-4 gallons per hour. I suspect you meant abt 3 litres per hour, and even that is probably at approaching full throttle. I have a yanma 27 hp diesel outboard and that uses 6.5 litres/hour at full throttle (4500 revs), and abt 3 litres per hour at my normal cruise speed (3500 revs) - taken from Yanma installation manual. For a 12 hp engine I would expect you to have a 12 gallon tank unless the boat has been modified to have a long range tank.

if u re-read the 2nd post it was 1 gall = 3 to 4 Hrs motoring for the Yanmar YSE 12..
i used to have the YSE 12 in my Co 32 its a very robust engine just watch-out for fuel on the Stbd flexi engine mount that has the injector pump directly above it
i manage 3.5 > 4 Lts per Hr @ 2400 rpm ( Nanni 4150) 7Kts cruising spd

engines are pretty consistent in the consumption per HP per hour so here's another input: my 27's use 2.5 litres per hour each at 2750 revs. i would therefore expect a 12 to use around 1 l/h or say 5 hrs per gallon

I have always been led to believe that most Marine diesels of whatever size comply with the following formula - plan on 2 litres per hour consumption per 10HP, if you're gentle and the sea is smooth you may only use 1 litre per hour per 10HP but when planning assume you will use 2. Always worked for me (Volvo 2001 with a 45 litre tank).

As a few will know, I have a YSE12 on a Mahogany Clinker I bought the end of last year to use mainly on the river Witham.

After much investigation I have learnt these engines need to be run around 85% throttle. I have got my boat ready in time for the season, and despite a few 'teething troubles' the engine, which I believe has been recently reconditioned, runs sweetly around this throttle setting. I've yet to find the fuel consumption, but believe I used around 1 to 2 litres an hour. I've had a dripping return pipe, finally found the cause to be from the banjo on the injector. Plus I mistakenly topped up my small tank with the 2 stroke. Was rushing to set off with another boat that had problems. Won't hurt the engine, but the fuel lines developed an air leak, so on my trip on Saturday I continually topped up. Even with leaks, bleeding etc. I think I've used around 2 gallons in 6 hours.

Oh, and despite buying 2 left hand props, still looking for the correct one, which I believe I need a 14 x 10 left hand with a 1 inch shaft, standard taper. Only paying around £30 for them so can resell, even if at a small loss, or just use as ornaments.

Had a YSB12 (basically the same engine) in my Cobra 850 - I averaged 1.1l/hour for 5 knots but when the seastate built or with a head wind it could go up to 1.5l/hr - this gives a 30hr range on a 10 gal tank - mind you your fillings will be loose after that long...

Just a word of caution - whatever the capacity of your tank and your "mpg" just remember you can not depend on putting this to the ultimate test. Remember it is unwise to run with a tank less that 1/3 capacity as you will risk drawing in air in a seaway.
I had this problem and it was not an experience I would want to repeat. Always top up sooner rather than later and carry spare fuel.
You may appreciate this already but better to be sure if it helps.
