How do you store your cutlery etc.?

I'm currently redesigning my galley and I'm wondering what the best thing is to do with my cutlery. I'm building a cupboard which will store plates and cups etc but not sure what the best solution for the cutlery and small items is. I don't have any drawers.

Can anyone tell/show me what solutions they have?

In a drawer with standard domestic cutlery insert. Was on the boat when I bought it. My friends boat has a purpose made wooden 'lift out' cutlery container, retained by corner notches on a shelf.

Airtight plastic biscuit box, like tupperware. It's the right size and keeps cutlery dry and free of dust.

This was a small winter's project after many years of dissatisfaction with various solutions. Made from off-cuts of teak and mahogany and some s.s. screws, it has two holes in the back that mate with screws in the galley bulkhead and sits out of the way but easily available. Note the sloping back and covered restraining screws that hold the cutlery and prevent movement and clinking under way.

No drawers or cupboards on KS, just a sort of cave locker under the side-deck. All the plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery fit into a wooden rack outboard of the cooker, with sections for each kind of item. The cutlery part is essentially a set of tall narrow boxes side by side.

A cheap plastic cutlery tray that goes on a shelf under the side deck behind the cooker.

The shelf has a lip & I have fitted battens to stop stuff sliding around. Only disadvantage is leaning across cooking food to get the stuff I need. I don't often cook under way - that's what anchors & nice bays are for, and if I remember to lay the table first, I don't need to reach over.

Never had anything fall out despite some really bad overfall experiences (bad timing & not wanting to divert all the way round due to extra distance & time).

Like you, no drawers!
We have a standard metal cutlery tray on a shelf. It doesn't spill, and the tray stays in place as its on scootguard (rubbery matting). The cupboard has a positive latched door as well.

This was something I nagged over for ages, since I had nowhere suitable to put a drawer. However I did have two companionway steps (the third and top step is the lid of the engine bay). The galley is adjacent the companionway. Since the step rise was quite generous (260mm for each step) there was room to fabricate a drawer under each one. The top drawer contains cutlery (in dividers); the bottom one holds frequenty-used tools. It certainly wouldn't work for all boats, but for me it converted two lumps of fresh air into useful space.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to use a cutlery tray and make sure the galley cupboard has space for it.

I found these items from Ikea (The plate holder looks useful and only about a fiver!)

We use something very similar to that wood box from Ikea, but ours is green plastic and the handle has been cut off so it's about as tall as that wood one. It came with the boat and is about to be replaced by a wood box from Ikea that I found out about very recently ;)

I doubt the plate holder's stainless, so I'll give it a couple of seasons before it looks tatty and needs replacing.
