As in the title. It's a metal 'mesh' inside. Do you use white spirit, petrol, degreaser or what?

Thanks.

Personally I'd wash it it kerosene then soak it in engine oil and allow to drain before refitting

but you could do what the owners manual stipulates !

Past advice has been to clean it with diesel. I cleaned mine VP 2003 by immersing it in a small bath of old diesel for a few weeks. Not sure what good it did, but all seems ok.

Thanks for the comments everyone. My filter doesn't seem too bad but it looks like diesel is the stuff to use. I don't have a user manual and trying to find information on the internet just brings up everything to do with Volvo cars - especially those of 2001 vintage.

Go to the Volvo Penta website, select "find your engine", enter 2001, download the operator manual.

You can down load Volvo Penta manuals from Volvo Penta's website at http://www.volvopenta.com/volvopent...lication_search/Pages/publication_search.aspx

The owners manual and the 'shop manual for the 2001 series engines can also be found at http://www.bluemoment.com/downloads.html

If you search for Volvo youll just find Volvo (cars)
