My new project boat, just back from the med, has leaky windows. All the seals are rock hard.

I rang Trend marine the window manufacturers, and they were as much use as a chocolate fire-guard.

Example window here:

trend's response here:

---------------------------

I have spoken with production, and unfortunately we do not have any instructions on how to replace the weatherseal on the windows fitted to a Sealine 390. Looking back through our records most of the opening windows are shown as outside sliders, therefore making the repair more difficult. If you remove the handle and catch from the sliding panel, there may be enough room to slide the glass panel back over the fixed portion allowing enough space to feed out the old weatherseal and refit new. This can be a complex repair and should only be carried out by a competent person.

---------------------------

So:

do I have to take the window frames out or not?

Any tips or suggestions?

thanks!

Yes you do need to remove to re seal them properly, I have a friend who refurbs marine windows, can get a price if you like.

I don't know if I speak for others but I would be very interested on how your "new project boat" is coming along.

How about a bit of a rebuild thread with lots of pics?

What I saw of the boat, you have a really fantastic bargain.

I know you are in the business and can get things done a lot cheaper than most of us but I'm sure people would like to see what you make of her.
Perhaps a copy of the post you put on SCMCHAT would be an interesting start.

There is a great thread running on the sealine forum :)
BTW Ellesar. i have just bought a load of the grey rubber insert from sealine parts and the inside brush seal are available from seals direct in new milton .

I will do one. As has been mentioned there is one and I don't like double posting, I will do one for here soon. Perhaps I should just double post. I've emailed you a link for now.

Just read the thread on the Sealine forum, what a great write-up.
My glass of wine almost went up the curtains with "...the church was full" :)

I might be wrong here, but i read the response from Trend as addressing leaky seals on the sliding bits, nothing to do with the grey trim with the bit missing in your pic. That grey trim just pulls out i think.

The grey bit just covers screw heads, so is cosmetic only and wont cause a leak, but it indicative of the state of all the seals.
I just need to know if i have to take the windows out and split the frames or not. If not how do I get the seals out. It isnt obvious because Ive tried - thats when I rand trend and explained. Someone here must have done it surely??

Ellesar i don't know the back story becuase I haven't see the threads on other forums. I was going to say the insert witht he broken/missing piece looks just like a trim, but you've confirmed that, and your picture therefore doesn't reveal the actual leaky/potentially leaky seals so its ahrd to comment

But these portholes are I think standard sizes, in which case (if the boat is a keeper) I'd chuck them all out and just fit new Lewmar st/steel portlights

Also there was a firm with a little stand at SIBS, inside near to Piers/Toby's stand, who specialise in refurbing portlights and hatches. The have sources/dies for the parts and seals and remake/refit all the seals

Also can you state the dims? I have an unused Lewmar BNIB here that is the same shape, that I can mail you so you could offer up for fit and inspect generally. Looks same size ish

jfm has a point about replacing the whole port hole.

To answer your question I am 90% confident that it is just a trim to cover the screw holes.

just pull it out and then use white marine silicone to refill the hole, smooth to finish.

Now the leak.....

Its unlikely to be from the rubber seal although there could be a screw hole seeping.

1)
The two black 'spoilers' are drain holes for the internal gutters.
Use a jet wash to clean seagul carp and mould out, as the drains block water level rises and leaks inside.

2)
internally the gutters need to be cleaned and sealed with silicone, you will need to post a picture of internal if you dont understand this statement.

3)
the internal seal between the two glass pains in like a felt brush door draft excluder.
mould and slim will be stopping this seal work, wet the area, use a butter knife to run between the glass and the felt , clean it and it will now seal again.

4) cut out as much seal as possible from the outside and reapply a generous amount of new silicone.

5)
use a hose on the gutter/drain holes every time you wash the boat down.

I've just realised it's a sliding window. The Lewmar replacement would be top hinged. Much better to switch to hinged surely, and abandon the sliding mechanism

More generally can you post a link to the refit of the boat if poss please?. Lots on here would love to see it (though er don't fancy joining another forum; one is enough!)

I am with DAKA here, I had the same windows in a 410 - try as per DAKAs suggestions but also soak with sainsburys mould and mildew remover repeatedly for a week or more. It will kill all the bugs and stuff and then jet wash it again. If you try and take the window out 1) the screws will probably be well corroded in the aluminium frame and 2) you will disturb the wall lining in the shower/loo. If you take it out the job could well grow like topsy.
