I fell across this blog. There are photos of amazing rope work.

I would love to be able to do this kind of stuff. Is there a book?

Before anyone post "have you asked the blogger", I have and the reply was not altogether helpful

Once there was a man in Germany who actually made all knots and splices from Ashley; took him 12 years. Lots of fun guaranteed ;)

"Soft shacle" here is made different method than traditional - in synthetic, such as dyneema; it's a splice made by passing the rope back through itself. Plenty instructions everywhere, just google it. Like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jH66tGsWv_Y ; http://l-36.com/soft_shackle_9.php ; http://www.colligomarine.com/docs/misc/splicing_instructions_for_web_rev_1_2.pdf
In case you'd like classic shackle that's really artistic work - this one for instance: http://www.frayedknotarts.com/tutorials/chesapeake/chesa.html

First thing you need to do is grow a big bushy beard. Next, ignore any fashion sense you may have, start dressing very badly and maybe consider cutting your own hair in future. Then concentrate on becoming a crashing bore with no life. If you do all this you can then concentrate on knitting bits of string into endless boring loops and twists while making something that after several days will look quite impressive.

It may also help to economise with soap, which will eventually reduce the number of people disturbing your concentration.

That's just an eye splice with a fancy whipping. There is no "rope work" in either photo, and I suspect any 12 year old girl could do the whipping for you given suitable threads. It's similar to a friendship bracelet in construction :)
