Interesting postscript to this story. The vessel First Light which was abandoned due to steering failure has apparently washed up in last few days in Barbados without the assistance of rudder or crew.
Watched her new mast being delivered into English Harbour. Big argument as to whether insurance pays or Oyster...............think insurance won! Stepped by Antigua Slipways but not without problems

True...very few fatalities but many rescues...Tony Bullimore, Mike Richey, Phillipe Jeantot, Dave Sellings etc.
This is the eternal problem with statistics - ostensibly objective but open to subjective interpretation.

Racing is very differant to cruising.
I race across oceans and it is full on, pretty much, no matter what. That is the way we choose to play the game.
Cruising I take a lot differant approach with a lot more gear and, usually, not a bunch of 'hard boys' (and gals) so things are adjusted accordingly.
The smallest I've raced across an ocean is 21ft without a problem but it was purpose built and would cut most larger cruisers in half if I 'T boned' one.
Horses for courses sort of question.
40ft is regarded by some as small. I know many who would regard that as big
