Hi fellas, sitting in Cowes Yacht haven at the moment. Given the wind, thinking of taking family to see WALL-E in Newport up river. Can anyone tell me how close we can get and does it dry out? There appears to be berthing up there but can't see any specifics (goodle earth).
Cheers

You can get right into Newport up to a road bridge, but it all dries out. There are pontoons, but most of these have quite large hollows in the mud due to prvious keel boat berthing, so you can end up too close to the pontoons when dried out! For the last 50m to the bridge, you can moor against the wall on the east side of the river on a much more solid bottom

Health warning - been a few years since I last went there so might have changed.

How far up can we go before it dries out?

Last lubrication is the Folly Inn, or lock into Island Harbour.
Plenty of info from chart and pilot book.

We stay at Island Marina quite often and prefer it to Cowes. You can walk to the Folly and its a 35/40 minute walk along the river bank to Newport. It also has a nice restraunt and NO WAKE from passing boats! Its tidal but give them a call and they will advise when you can get in

As others have said, Island Harbour then taxi, bus or walk to newport.
Warning the walk is about an hour on the river path but a nice walk if you have the stamina.

Don't want to risk the boat grounding. How far can we go up before it dries out? How about Island Harbour Marina, it appears to be gate locked? Taxi from there?

Depends when you go and what state of tide - much better to look at a chart and do the height of tide.

The Folly and Island Harbour are the last visitors moorings that don't dry. If you plan to get a taxi from either, get a mortgage first. Best option is stay in Cowes and get the bus - every 15 minutes during the day and every half hour all through the night.
