I was out on the solent today and there were so many Yachts it was impossible for me to give 1/2 mile clear water to all, sorry !

I need to maintain 20 to 25 knots in order to be manoeuvrable and to give as large a gap as possible to all sailing craft but I had never seen so many yachts as I did today between the Hamble and Chichester and I was amazed even the Yachts under power to port stood on.

What is the minimum distance you consider to be inoffensive ?

Its much easier when it is foggy as there are fewer boats to go around.
And usualy there is F3 or less wind so the Yachts are slower.

The speed makes it easier to keep clear of the yachts.

A quick turn and 1/4 mile gap in no time.
Once you slow you can not get out the way quickly.

I don't know, but I was out today with the FatLady in the Solent and I gave them as much room as I could! It got a lot less crowded as we proceeded west towards the Needles, a cracking trip but some dodging was involved! Worth it though.

You would not have been the MOBO who sped along inside the yellow bather's buoys off Shoreham/Lancing this afternoon would you? Even at planing speed they lacked any control over direction!!! Yes I know it is a troll! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

[/ QUOTE ]I'm not condoning their action, but I suppose they imagined they looked big and important enough for anyone smaller than them to avoid.

It should not matter how close you go as long as the name , port and SSR are properly concealed.

Dark Glasses , a hat and a balaclava also mitigate against personal recognition plus a shirt to cover one's tattoo collection .

Extra points are awarded if its a dinghy.

Try Dingy Racing missing a transom by an inch is excessive /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If the least you can do is 25 kts - leaving your pontoon is too close. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That double ended ketch with the tan sails is simply beautiful - did you make a note as to who / what she is?
I presume that you were the overtaking vessel - or was she overtaking you? Although you appear to now be on divergent courses in the photo.....
Re maintaining 20 - 25 knots to be manoeuverable, I presume you have twin engines, hence you should be pretty manoeuverable when pottering along at say 7 or 8 knots, and enjoying the scenery if it is so congested?

lets be blunt, if you happen to come that close to me at 25 knots, or the bozzos that came thro a childrens dinghy fleet in the solent this afternoon at that speed, you will find lots of air gun pellets in your flank, we're sick to death of stink boxes wash

Lets face it then, you are one of the idiots we have been discussing here for many years, that makes no effort to understand the differences and issues between different types of boating, which on the whole we have negotiated how to behave, and you want to escalate things again? <bemused>

Serious post here. I'm on a steep learning curve and am keen to gain as much knowledge as possible. We have a 25ft motor boat and although I'm gaining rapidly in knowledge and confidence about motor boating, I know nothing at all about sailing. When around sailing vessels, I either give them a wide berth, or if not possible, slow my speed and keep my wake to a minimum. Is this ok or do I need to do more? At 20 knots, I pass far enough to be sure my wake won't cause a problem - no idea if this is 0.5 miles or not though to be honest! I always try to pass behind them not infront. I find it really hard to predict what sailing boats are going to do - I can't predict when they will change direction, which makes it pretty stressful to be around them in close proximity like I was around the solent while on holiday last week. I'm even thinking of taking some sailing lessons just so I can understand what is going on, but I don't want to learn to sail as such so I'm not sure if a day will help! Not a troll honest - I just want to learn and asking you guys seems to be the best way of learning about this!

Is this post in the same ridiculous vein as your previous ones such as "In what circumstances should sail give way to power ?".
If you really believe that you can't control your boat below 20 knots, then you are incompetant.

Everyone else can.
