How can I tell what Volvo drive I have?

DpA can run on engine oil, but I'd advise synthetic as it stands up better with water when the seals leak, kad32 can have sx or dpe drive.

Was about to post the same question when I found this thread.
Likewise have identified that I have a pair of 290 drives but is there a way of telling the difference after that?
Understand the recommendation of using synthetic oil but if the specified mineral oil has been used previously, is it a problem to then change to synthetic? Or is it a case that if you use the correct synthetic oil that it doesn't matter what the drive version is, or what was used in it before?

Thanks, that chart was useful. Looking at the profiles I can see it is def not a 290 DP, In fact I think FlowerPower is right and it is in fact a DP-D. I am basing this on the shape of the bottom of the anti cavitation plate above the props.

No visible plates anywhere on drive or engine as far as I can see. :(

If it's a 1997 AD31P-A or AD31L-A, the most likely drive fitted will be a DP-D.

The older drive will accept synthetic even if mineral used before, there is not a problem as there is no combustion contamination unlike converting an old engine from mineral to synthetic.

The synthetic is far superior and will give some protection when (not if in my experience) the drive gets water in it, there is a good reason Volvo changed the spec!
