Big enough to make me take a sharp intake of breath when I have to buy any rope for it.

I think it must be about 12 meters, but is fairly slim and has a slight curve in it which can be accentuated.

They\'re all little...

after seeing Mirabella V's mast laid out on our dockside then craned into position, I believe it ought to have a spiral staircase running up the inside of it.

Re: They\'re all little...

The mast on Galadriel goes right to the top.

It's high enough to be able to raise the mainsail.

Is'nt that lucky?

Used my domestic extension ladders to reeve lazyjack lines last month. The ladder is long enough to reach the chimneypots on the house but at full extension and resting on the cabin top it still went less than half way up the mast. No wonder I'm bricking it when I go up in the bosun's chair.

FWIW it is designed for the ICW so has an air draft of 62' / 19m

So you've got one of those little houses then?

By the way go onto PBO and tell Surekandoo that he should use ladders to go up his mast (Up The Mast) He seems to be prevaricating. I think he feels it's not seamanlike.

If you insist on using ladders to climb a mast - make sure you attach a Halyard securely to the top of them. Wear a harness and use a second Halyard for yourself.

In the visible domain, light shining from the sun reflects off my mast into the lenses of my eyes onto the retinas. From there a set of electronic signals travelling at 2400 baud 8 bit parallel enables my minds eye to construct a sharp respresentation of the external world. What I am getting is a vision of mast which starts in the middle and goes out in two directions - up and down before reaching two ends. Of course not all the light is reflected - most of it is absorbed in attempt to break down the varnish as quick as possible.

In the invisible domain it goes off at a tangent perpandicular to the square of the force opposing the inertia needed to free the blocks from salt incrustation. You can sometimes see it when conventional reality becomes eclipsed by a mysterious softening of learned barriers. There is no varnish in this domain, just an delightful opportunity to appreciate what is real.

I find the safest way of using a ladder is to tie a rope to the top of it, round the mast then back between the top & 2nd rung and down to the bottom. Once in position i haul the line tight and tie it to the ladder, the top end is now securely held to the mast. I can do that easily because I have no stays or spreaders to get in the way as it slides up.

If you'd ben arsed to read the Up The Mast Thread you would see that I suggested using a halyard to hoist the ladder, and to tie in the bottom.

Also about 11m from coach roof to mast head .. seems a lot further from up there. Relatively speaking, its on the short side, bit like its owner /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
