How big an overlap?

Cherbourg 22nd July, 9.00 ish. First alerted by shrill female voice shouting "slow down". Saw mast moving fast between P and Q pontoons. Then without any discernable slowing, said mast did a sharp turn to left into a vacant berth. Bouncing off the boat to right just behind the end of the finger pontoon, then the boat to left in same finger pontoon bay, the still fast moving boat, now completely in view, hit the main walkway. Luckily the boat was an older design, one with a shallow pitched curved stem instead of the modern near vertical design. The boat rose up over the walkway and slid across aiming directly at a sideways moored Contest on the other side. Stopped by its keel, inches short of the Contest, the boat slid back into the water with surprisingly little damage. Apparently, the throttle lever stuck. Ironically, across the transom .... RAFYC.

Darthaven and Plymouth Yacht haven seem to have the worst examples in my recent experience.

[/ QUOTE ]We're in Plymouth Yachthaven and I really haven't noticed it as a problem. I shall keep my eyes open more!

Re: Still don\'t agree....

I posted last year that I intended to try that next time but Jimi kindly pointed out don't try it in any kind of cross wind.

Scuttlebut Cherbourg run was first opportunity but finally chicken out as I did not want to make a complete C*ckup in front of so many experienced expert sailors!!

Will try it one quiet morning when there is also a complete empty double berth then if I make a mess and go over too much to one side I can pretend its what I intended all along. I always get a dry mouth when berthing and its nothing to do with looking forward to a drink!

The only I have noticed at our marina is yachts with anchors permantly fixed at front, often visiting yachts overhang the walkway, never noticed it with motorboats (& I guess there's about 50/50 on our pontoon)

If I'm not mistaken, I count one mobo rail and two raggie bows overhanging that there pontoon.

There's only one raggie there, it's a cutter rig.

In the marina where I berth you are allowed to have a boat up to 2ft longer than the berth. (you pay for whatever is longer the boat or the berth) The boat may project up to 2ft into the fairway but may not overhang the walkway at all. If it does you'll get a prompt call from the marina management on Monday morning.
