I don't meant to protect the jewel and pivot. I meant to keep the polarisation. best may be to simply store away from ferrous metal but space is sometimes lacking. I have 2 in their boxes next to each other away from other metal.is that ok or not for example?

I think you've got the right idea. I'd also avoid anything electric or magnetic, and think about any hidden cables in your house, under the floor etc..

Imagine a Boat Chandlers shop and all those Compasses all sitting in the display cabinets ... on the shelves ..... they sit there month after month ... year on year ...
True. But i have never swung a compass to see how true they are. needle compass piece of cake just stick a magnet at N seeking pole to realign dipoles. card compasses often have two bars underneath so same trick cannot be used. I like to collect compasses.

They just point to where they're attracted. They aren't remagnetised to something offline by being near something else that's magnetic. How could they be?

If that were the case a compass swinger wouldn't just have to instal compensators near a compass, they'd have to re-magnetise the thing wth some sort of coil. They don't.

Too late to start a debate tonight, but I don't agree with any of that.
