The hour displays for my TAMD41Ps (2001) are usually blank, but occasionally kick back into life - the hours then shown match my notes of hours run, so the info is stored somewhere in the tachos, as no computer/ECU.

Blimey, this thread is painful!

Let me try and explain my understanding....

Volvo Penta Tachometer 873992 fitted to many older engines (see https://www.yachtboatparts.com/volv...3992---vp873688-vp873660-or-873998-8003-p.asp) stores the hours on the circuit board on the tachometer. The OEM LCD display displays the hours from the circuit board.

Of the engines that are listed some are electronic (such as my KAD43P with EDCv1) and some are totally mechanical. EDC engines also record the hours in the ECU memory and you get interrogate them with Vodia.

The early screen replacement kits (display plus ribbon) appear to count their own hours and you therefore see zero hours after replacement. What's interesting is that I suspect that the tachometer will probably also be recording actual hours as will the ECU.

The later / better replacement screen kits (e.g. the ones from Sweden) get their hours from the tachometer circuit board and are a simple plug and play replacement for the originals. Therefore you will see actual hours after replacing the screen. Replacement takes about 30 mins to do but you need some very small screwdrivers, the ability to handle small screws and good eyesight. It's not brain surgery but some clumsy people might find it a challenge.

Rickard, I bought two from you and they work perfectly. I hope my description above is fairly accurate!

For those people that want to buy from the UK, it's important to check with the vendor whether the existing hours will continue to be displayed.

Please note that the replacement should consist of the screen and a connector ribbon and look like this....

Not like this....

The sunshine in Saturday has revived the absent or dim hour display on my starboard tachometer on the flybridge .

The port tachometer did stop working once when it got wet and was not then counting the hours. So it is about 8 hours behind. You would think being waterproof would be a design requirement.
