Just wondered if anyone else had purchased Houdini hatches -(Super 50 model) around May 2009 and has now found that the edges of the opening part of the hatch are badly corroding. If so please PM me

The ones we removed fron the boat in 2009 were leaking but there was no corrosion on them and they were over 20 years old, but could not be re sealed economically.

Houdini after seeing detailed photos of the corrosion said that at 2.5 yeear old a hatch should not corrode as badly as they had and said they would replace them, if we returned the corroded ones so they could investigate the fault. Unfortunately they have now twice supplied us with damaged replacements, and will not do anything else as they say the replacements are within their manufacturing tolerance. This includes damages anodising and a bar that is so bent so it touchs the glass!

You paid £400 for a Houdini ?! I must be out of touch, I'd expect Lewmar for that, have had 2 for around the £400 mark, with 10-12 years inbetween.

Have you ever noticed the hatches hanging-up-to-dry (apparently after anodising) down a little side street in Emsworth? - not far from a certain large chandlers. Often wondered what brand they might be.

Vic,

I haven't seen that, TBH I thought I'd been rooked nearby as the 2nd Lewmar had different bolt holes to the first ( and a friends' 'Direct Houdini replacement' had a different size deck aperture AND different bolt holes ! ) but on reading the OP's tale maybe it wasn't so bad...

Not noticed any anodising problems with my Lewmar hatches.
