Some here will be familiar with the art of West Country's Michael Lees. More will be familiar with the Hoshi and Provident when owned/operated by the Island Cruising Club of Salcombe.

'Provident' gave author John Dyson ( 'Pugwash' of this parish ) and myself a tow out of Brest to the mouth of the Chenal du Four one engineless morning. Milady and I shared Hoshi's stern cabin for a week 'back in the day'.
At that time the graceful gentleman's yacht was skippered by a lady called simply 'H'.

I know Hoshi went to France. Does anyone know what became of 'H'....?

I have the painting of Provident alone, another of the Michael Lees trilogy. I bought it for my (now late) father who used to sail Hoshi and Provident through the ICC and often with JDS.

AFAIK Hoshi is still in France and undergoing complete restoration at Chantier Duguip in Brest.

I’m afraid I have no knowledge of ‘H’ though.

I have a copy of the above to give to my club, a little later this month.
Peeps here might care to have a scrute through Michael Lees Here

Both 'Hoshi' and 'Provident' were frequent visitors to Plymouth, so a pang of nostalgia would not seem misplaced.

We did a week's dinghy sailing course with the ICC IN 1956. We always aspired to the heights of sailing on Hoshi and Provident but never got there, my father being 69 at the time and still working. We mostly sailed on the club's 13.5' gunter-rigged dinghies and I had occasional use of a Swordfish that planed well. We slept on grand hulks such as Rulewater, which was very grand, being all mahogany inside.

You will find Hilary 'H' Ashford on Facebook.

Never met her myself, but from her site there she seems involved with horses.
