Hi - just replaced my cockpit drains with new DZR ball valves and hose tails (from ASAP) and I also replaced the hose...

When I checked the other day after rain I noticed that there is a leak from the hose - I suspect that the hose is too heavy duty for the clips to collapse it onto the hose tail - I'm think of swapping to high torque jubilee clips, or getting a lighter pipe...

Hose tail and internal diameter of the hose is 19mm - I've clamped them with standard jubilee clips any idea's what else I could do??

PTFE tape on the tail. Wrap enough round such that you have to force the hose on. Then jubilee clip it.

Are you sure its not water trickling down from a dodgy joint between the cockpit sole and the drain fitting?

If you are then take the hose off again dip the end in boiling water to soften it refit it and tighten the hose clamp while it is still soft. Dont over tighten .

Or use a sealant as suggested

19mm seems very small for cockpit drains

I spent a rather boring 20 mins boiling the end to fit on the deck fitting and another 20 mins swearing "easing" it onto the fitting.

Didnt leak though did it?........... Anyway if if rain is going to leak it will be at the bottom end not the top end.

Correct - I think it's flowing down the pipe, hitting the top of the hose tail, most of it is then travels on as it should, but a small amount is finding its way down between the outer wall of the hose-tail and inner wall of hose....

Cockpit sole fittings are good as there's nothing to catch - gravity takes care...

VicS - 19mm doesn't sound much but I didn't want to change the skin fitting, and there's two of them so in total I have the better part of 40mm of pipe to drain the cockpit of a 20' boat.... in practice it drains pretty quickly.....

Given the amount of rain we have had it could have leaked from anywhere - I've had about 100 lts out of the boat this winter and "think" I've found small hole it has come through.

Boat is always drier at sea :)

Last weekend I fitted the hose/hose tail joints after replacing the sea cocks. It was not that convenient to soak the hose ends in boiling water due to how they were lying in the bilge and the rigidity. I got the fan heater and let it play on the pipes until they were well hot and they slipped on really easily. thought I should share this in case others have the same problem
cheers

you need a stretcher up it when boiling hot, then let it cool a tad remove the stretcher & pop it on the spigot & tighten the clip
Yes, did that as well :)

She was built in imperial measurements, needless to say the hose was metric. The fittings will last another 20 years and I am not going to replace them.

Seems to me there are two threads running here (and why not)??
1) Hose too loose: Do you have two jubilee clips each end of the hose? They need to be close (side by side) but rotated so the screws are opposed. This is so the pinched up hose caused by the tightening of one screw is flattened by its pair. There was a thread on this a week or so ago on one vs two clips which missed this point – it is less critical on a tight hose but still worth doing below the waterline (IMHO);
2) Hose too tight: Heat only say 2” (50mm) of the hose (in a cup of hot water is often enough) but a heat gun on lowish setting is OK AND smear some dishwashing detergent up the hose. If the whole hose is loose and floppy you can’t get as much force on it, lubrication makes it soooo much easier.
