hose pipes

[ QUOTE ]
Never used a marina hose. Have 2 of my own and know where they have been. Plus an assortment of hose connections.
By the way, if you come to the ballearics, make sure you buy a self sealing male connection, from a local chandlers, as all the marinas have the same connection. (well the ones I know anyway)

Same for me over here in Turkey.
Just make sure you remember not to leave your adaptor on the tap, it will be gone as soon as you turn your back.

Ours have recently fitted trigger type ends, like you have for washing your car, only these dont have an adjustable spray just the main jet.

A bit of a pain really as its now harder to connect up a pressure washer, they also look like they would be a bit reluctant to come off and I dont like the thought of interfering with the marina's fittings.

I always run the water for a while before popping the hose in the tank.

What happened to us is that the water company sent an inspector to see us and he inspects your system and then tells you what changes he wants made. You agree a reasonable time to do the changes and he comes back and checks it is done as agreed.
We had to fit double check valves on all out taps. Remove all the hoses from the taps and change from blue poly pipe to black poly pipe. He explained the blue poly pipe was not designed for above ground use , so I could lag it all or change it. I changed it. When I asked about why the hoses had to be removed he explained that it was possible for water to sit in the loops and attract bacteria.
I asked a plumber friend of mine about water being syphoned from the river into the mains and he said that if there was a fire and a couple of fire engines connected up to the mains nearby they can draw so much water that this can cause this problem.

Prob 1, if you are on the end of a pontoon and you turn the hose on if the end of another hose is in the water further back, the venturi princilpe kicks in and it draws sea water/river water into your hose.

I doubt this would occur, the water in the hose should be under greater pressure than atmospheric (it got to you) hence water would flow out of both hoses.

The Venturi effect occurs if there is a change in cross sectional area in the pipe, large/small/large. The fluid accelerates with resultant pressure drop/suction at the branch.

More likely, as has been said, it could back contaminate the main, thats why we have air gaps between taps/outlets and cisterns/baths/basins and removable filling loops to some boilers.

Serious risk of contamination though, if the hose end is dropped into contaminated water! I always use my own hose, flush the connection well, flush the hose, then treat the water when filling my CW tanks!
