Heard from Trinity House this morning, as follows:
You may recall that between 30 June and 30 September this year we carried out a consultation with user representative organisations.....
Having carefully considered all the responses received and following an assessment of the risks presented specifically at this location I can now advise that it has been decided to discontinue the marking of the Gore Channel and instead mark the Copperas Channel as follows:
· The “East Last” (Port Lateral) buoy to be repositioned, to the south of the Copperas Channel, in position Lat 51° 23.63’N., Long 001° 12.56’E and renamed “Reculver”.
· The “Hook Spit” (Starboard Lateral) buoy to be repositioned to the west to mark the northern edge of the Copperas Channel, in position Lat 51° 23.81’N., Long 001° 11.18’E and renamed “Copperas”.
These changes will be carried out on or about the 7 February 2012 and we will shortly be issuing a Notice to Mariners advising of these forthcoming alterations.
It's a change that we supported, having used the Copperas Channel several times in recent months and found far more water there than through the marked channel. But it is a radical change to a route that has been marked for aeons, and will undoubtedly confuse matelots who go about their way oblivious to chart updates. At least we have a few months to get the word round!
