Off to France tomorrow night to stock up for Xmas. Staying in Honfleur coz I know its nice but hope to visit Deauville too.

Looking for restaurant suggestions for Honfleur (dinner) and Deauville (lunch).

Also any suggestions for places of interest most welcome.

Travelling by car / ferry to Caen / Ouistrham just in case you were wondering

The street market in Caen every Sunday is the largest one outside Paris and more than justifies the effort in getting there.

There is a little marina there as well at the top of the Ouistreham Canal whcih, for future reference, is a very cheap place to stop for a few days if you can get over there with your boat.

Honfleur is over-flowing with restaurants and undoubtedly there must be some gooduns there somewhere and at this time of year you should be able to find one. I was disappointed with the meals I ate there back in May when it was very busy. One I can recommend as quite seriously the best I've ever known in Normandy is the Aux Huit Viandes on the Quai Michel Fere in not far away Le Havre.

Do you happen to know what time the market at Caen stays open too ?

I'll be coming back that way Sunday so that loooks good.

Yes I've stayed in the Ouistreham marina and then sailed direct to Honfleur missing out Deauville.

SWMBO wants to see Honfleur and I've never been to Deauville so hence the itinery for the trip.

Trying to remember which one we eat in which was good. Think it was Le Vieux. These are recommended anyway.

Le Vieux Honfleur, 13 quai St-Étienne (02 31 89 15 31),
La Fleur de Sel, 17 rue Haute (02 31 89 01 92)
La Tortue, 36 rue de l’Homme de Bois (02 31 98 87 91)

Re: Deauville lunch

a restaurant le garage, bet the details are in google. worth booking (also finding the address) but it's righyt in the middle, in the building once used as a car sales place.. No, not a fortune, prix fixe, just to the sw of the central roundabout bit. I wd probably recommend fish, and the ususal Calva palava at the end...

Just up the hill out of central Honfleur (10mins walk), heading roughly west I think, is the 'Ferme St. Simeon' which is a hotel and restaurant to die for. Not cheap but an unforgetable experience.

The market closes down around 1400. It is situated right opposite the marina.

Lastnight I remembered the name of a restaurant that we ate in having seen it referred to in a "100 best restaurants in France" type article. It was called the Assiette Gourmand and it is close to the entrance to the inner harbour on the North side.

I have sailed into Honfleur half a dozen times and the surprising thing is that I have never found it to be particularly full. My (much travelled) wife declares it to be one of the prettiest towns anywhere and certainly the most beautiful port in France.

Have fun.

I wouldn't eat in Deauville. Walk over the bridge into Trouville - there's loads to choose from - with a better atmosphere.
