Hmmm but is it actually an oil warning or not.
One to store in the old on board data banks if you have a similar problem to solve.
SCENARIO.
On holiday in caraven.
From cold engine starts as normal AND green pressure light illuminates as expected.
Go for a 10 min blast to check the crab pot. Still ok
tickover for a few minutes , to check pot, still ok
Throttle up to go back light flickers on and off and engine is lumpy beyond tickover.
green light stays firmly OUT.
Damn , panic stop engine.
it did this once before 4 weeks ago, but when left for 30 min it cleared.
Try it again it was beautiful morning for a row. NO success.
To far to row all the way so limp mode with no light it is.
ACTIONS
kind neighbour loans 3g wifi for net search.
That yields virtually nothing other than a vague suggestion its carb and tick over related.
I like to think I know a bit about engines and dismiss that as a red herring its the oil warning light after all.
While online I get the phone number for the dealer "Farndon Marina" and place a call.
The outboard guy is VERY helpful but not at base can i give him a while to get back and do some looking, sure.
Whilst waiting I check all electrical connections OK
Find the oil pressure sensor , looks OK and well connected / protected.
Remember the vague hint so i check both fuel filter and onboard tank. Had already checked the remote i was running from originally. ALL clear
Set up motor in bucket so when he rings back I can let him hear it, so much better than a description.
Wait, Wait, Wait,,,,,,
What is that brass bit on top of the carb. Looks like a jet ! should I have a look ?
warranty ? yes , no, yes, no. Sod it I came on holiday to use it I pop it out.
Big cross holes are clear fine jet hole not sure can not see clearly.
Suck not very well, blow seems better can hear it hissing, suck again hmmm that seeeeems better. Put it all back.
Then my man rings back can not understnd why oil warning light is not coming on thats a big concern but from the symptoms described deffo mucky carb , dirty fix use a carb cleaner , proper fix back to him for investigation . Oban to Newark no way.
I said let me start it up and you can listen, its all ready to go. It wasn't I had forgotten to fit the kill cord.
Cold start with choke , instantly off, and it runs up like a dream to full throttle AND the green light is ON and stays ON when i return to tickover. I give it 20 seconds and stop the engine.
That sounds great says he, it is says I and the green light is ON!
He says you had my F'n worried with that green light but I was sure it was carb related.
We discuss for a few more minutes and come to the
CONCLUSION
It was crap in the jet on top of the carb.
That MUST affect tickover speed and although the engine runs it does not generate the correct pressure signal to power the green light.
Proof is it has run for a further 10hours without a hiccup and a steady green light at all speeds.
That vague hint on the internet was correct and I should not have been such a smart arse know it all to dismiss it. well I didn't totally did I.
Thought for the day the contaminant was BEYOND the filter and the engine was AS DELIVERED so what was it and how did it get there. Who knows but at least its sorted and you have a clue if anything similar happens to you.
Regards Clive
PS in the 10 hours fault free running many sights were seen , fish caught and an Otter spotted.
