After having my second one of these engines I have suffered the same problem with both engines.........they foul the sparkplug when trolling at slow speed for hours on end.

I have a few other engines and had many more others.........none of them do this. It is dry sooty fouling and engine cuts out until a clean plug is put in. Sometimes it will go for an hour or two and others nearly all day.

Have tried the pilot screw 1 1/4 turns out to 1 1/8. When plug starts to foul, the screw don`t make no difference. It can foul at 1 1/8 one day and the next run a nice brown colour for a few days at same setting, until a week later it soots up again,

Pilot jet is not moving as is is carefully marked in segments.
Trying one plug up the heat range has no effect Super duper plugs have no effect.........one guy even ran his on 4star fuel...no effect. Isuspect it is because carb has only two jets as they hesitate when jumping from the low jet to the fast one. High speed running is no problem .......will go all day but these engines were bought for trolling all day . When running they are superb for the job......very steady. Any input appreciated. This is a new carb which was supposed to clear up the problems of the last models

If you are trolling for Hours, maybe go the other end of the Heat Range?
I know that should not be the real remedy.
Seeing as You have tried to adjust the pilot screw to help.
You have done the "Right thing"
Unusual for that eng to hiccup at tickover. In My experiance.
Pilot jet is not normally So touchy to a quater turn.
Check, Float level.
Check air intake/filter?
What make Spark Plug are You using?

Another thing that engines with cd ignition repospond to is an increase in the electrode gap. Requires a larger spark which the ignition pack provides, and burns cleaner.
I had lots of probs with that engine. Found the Yamaha 4 hp would chug for hours with no problems.

Thanks for input guys. All float levels etc have been checked. And also opened plug gap ........it just goes a little longer before fouling. Ngk plugs. Even had dealer out in boat with the last model. Yes I have both of the Yamaha 4hp engines .............never a prob. Thing is you could go out tomorrow and troll for a week with plug a nice colour then it will start sooting again for days on end without jet having moved. How could Honda have got it so wrong on this model?
The first one I had ran 800hrs before getting the symptoms . This engine came with a boat I purchased and went great for the first 100 hrs. They get run hard from time to time to try and keep them sweet.
