Holman and Pye design

Hi folks,

Can anyone give me any information on a Holman and Pye designed quarter tonner - 26feet long. Designed in 1972? Displacement two and a half tonnes.
I know that's not a lot to go on.

We don't have many overseas designs common in New Zealand and so this is unfamiliar to me. I am particularly interested in sailing performance and stability, [as some quarter tonners were a bit extreme with their shapes ]but any information would be appreciated.

Hi
David Cooper, who now runs Holman & Pye, appears to have encyclopeadic knowledge of their designs.
Phone nr is 44 1206 382478.
I will try and find out if they have an Email later on.
I believe the Hustler 25.5 was a 1/4 tonner, could it be that.

Hi
We have a 25.5 Hustler which we are taking on a 5 month cruise to France & Spain.
At the moment we are stuck in a marina on the east coast due to the high winds.

Very good sea boat with good performance. the forward cabin is rather low but you can't have everything. In a survey three weeks ago we had a clean bill of health. We also have reports and plans will send copies if you wish.

Thanks for your reply,

It does look as if it is a Hustler 25.5 so I would be glad of any information.

As I said, although I've been sailing here in NZ for 20 years, Holman and Pye is a new area for me. I can't fault the boat, but it has been suggested that downwind stability might be a problem, with the fine entry of some quarter tonners of that era, leading to broaches.
I do most of my sailing single-handed, but I do want a faster boat, to extend my cruising range.

Any comments about handling would be appreciated

Thanks

All older designs suffer downwind compared to modern broad beamed, broad transomed, flat run designs. Oldies roll more and plane less. Fact-of-lfe. But I wouldn't describe the 25.5 as unstable downwind. Rolly, but not unstable. The one vice I remember was that it didn'tt like big gusts when going to windward and would gripe up fairly violently as the rudder lost control over the immersed hull shape and the change in the centre of effort/ centre of resistance equation.

Apart from that it was a great little boat which we used for JOG racing 2 or 3 up, and channel cruising. The owner ocassionally used to single hand it, as well. BTW, I'm 6 foot and just about fitted down below with my head touching the deckhead, but not in cricked-neck fashion.
