Quite so. The image depicts a hard plastic adaptor intended for linking hoses of different sizes. Can be very useful, but absolutely not for the job scambledegg has in mind.

Not sure why it would be such a bad idea. Would you explain?
If it can be bonded to the stern tube and is strong and rigid enough to take a bit of compression from jubilee clip attaching the seal to it?
 
Volvo part numbers s tamped on the part are misleading when they put it in a box with the clamp and other bits it takes a new number

I was thinking the seal was to go inside the existing stern tube. So no need for a Jubilee clip. If I've got this right, OP's problem was the difference in outside diameter between the outside of the seal and the inside of the tube.

The other way round actually. The stern tube has to fit inside the wide end of the seal. in my case the stern tube is too wide o.d. to do that ( and there's a lip around the end of it to make matters worse).
 
Probably doesn't apply in your case, when I used a vernier to measure my stern tube just aft of the seal it was a odd size but when I removed the seal there was a step down on the stern tube that the seal fitted to and that was a standard size.

It looks like I shall have to purchase a new seal that will fit my combination of shaft and stern tube diameters (and dispose of the Radice RMTA seal I already bought :ambivalence:

I still hold out a faint hope I can find an adapter, to do this below (the red shaded part), sliding over the outside of the stern tube, or, perhaps fitting inside it:

What is the inside diameter of your stern tube?

1 1/4 " schedule tube has an O/D of just over 42 mm and it the inside dia of your stern tube is about the same you could get a 1 1/4 BSP nipple of short length of stainless tube that would fit inside you stern tube sealed and held in with grub screws through the stern tube.

I have fitted a Volvo 1" seal onto a 1-7/8 stern tube. It was a slight stretch and the lip on the tube was removed with some emery cloth. This was on my Moody and I know others have fitted one also. I expect your original Volvo seal was no different dimensions to a new one.

Very encouraging. I did try to sand down the lip on the stern tube - it takes the diameter out to almost 52 mm. You have inspired me to try harder. The physical contortion needed to apply effort on it is the main obstacle.

Had to do the same with our Moody stern tube. Dremel made light work of the task and the 1-3/4 seal slid on. Well the first one did, the second one with the same part number put up a bit of resistance but it went on eventually.

There is also a version with a water feed from the likes of ASAP supplies which I bought by mistake. I have it as a spare on board with a bolt in the threaded hole.
 
I have been wrestling with the same problem, pity I didn't notice this thread. I really wanted a burpless lip seal such as the Radice but my stern tube is 47mm OD with a 25mm shaft. Boat is a Konsort. As I was replacing a face seal that I didn't trust I ruled out a PSS or Deep sea seal -both of which would fit and I couldn't find a lip seal that would. I decided in the end to go for a conventional stuffing box on a flexible mounting. A bit more expensive than the alternatives but hopefully reliable and long lasting. I'm going to try some super scientific Gore tex gland packing (GFO) which claims that it will allow a stffing box to run dripless.
 
I am pleased to report that I have succeeded in making my Radice seal (intended for 43mm o.d. stern tube) fit to my stern tube, actual o.d. 48mm, by taking a Dremel tool and removing the raised lip around the inboard end of the stern tube. I also created a chamfer on the end of the tube to help get the seal started over the end of the tube, which helped a lot.
So, Ithet's and Pete7's suggestions worked in combination and they win the virtual bottle of beer ( or an actual beer if we should ever meet).
