Excuse me if this subject is hidden in the forum somewhere...

My water injected exhaust elbow has developed a hole in the dry section of the elbow. (Ford 1.8 diesel, Bowman heat exchanger)

Does anyone know if the casting can be successfully repaired by welding or brazing? The material seems to be a cast ali of some sort.

Thanks

You will be able to get a replacement at a reasonable price from http://www.asap-supplies.com This is one of the advantages of having a maranised Ford instead of a 'marine' engine.

Some castings can be succesfully repaired by welding, but it is quite tricky, and the success or otherwise depends on the original quality of the casting, and the extent of corrosion. Rust has to be removed from the area of the weld, and in your case this may well be impossible. It will almost certainly be cheaper to go for new.

Thanks Ian and Harry,

I take your point about getting the part 'clean'; from what I have read today about ali' welding, as with all welding I suppose, cleanliness is next to Godliness.

I had a look at ASAP and their range is impressive, they are bookmarked now; however I have obtained a replacement via Lancing Marine who are about £8 cheaper !!

Thanks again all.

Just found one myself, in the exchanger itself, not the elbow. It had been repaired more than seven years ago (before I bought the boat) by re-building the casting with plastic metal or similar. I am amazed it lasted so long, but it crumbled away as I tried to remove the elbow.

My problem is now to source a new manifold/exchanger for a Watermota Seapanther. The existing one is a Bowman type FM16. I don't fancy the plastic metal method myself.

Sorry to hear your bad news Ken, have you tried Bowman themselves ?

Their website is www.ejbowman.co.uk ; don't bother downloading the pdf heat exchanger files as they don't contain your FM16, there's anFM160 but .....

Anyway, good luck in your search.

Thanks Brian, I had seen the FM160 on the site and will try e-mail, but I already have an enquiry in to ASAP, so will have to give them time to respond first.
