My Sadler 34, fitted with a standard Plastimo Atlantic cooker, is due for an insurance survey next year. However the cooker is not fitted with flame failure devices on the hob burners. To avoid questions I would be interested in readers' experiences of insurance companies and surveyors attitudes to this. On our boat, to date,, we have addressed the issue with 'procedure' - that is, the cook never leaves the vacinity of the cooker with the hobs lit. To me it would seem very simple to fit new, updated, burners/controllers with thermocouples. Has anyone any experience of this? I would add that the cooker is otherwise in fine fettle.

when I last checked about that (my hob is an unidentified 70s Italian one) it was almost impossible to find as I had to replace the whole knob/on/off/regulator (however you call that!) and no one knew what capacity mine were...
if you do come across an easy solution, would be interested to see how and where you got the kit from!

cheers

V.

If your boat isn't used on inland waterways, I think your stated procedure should satisfy any vaguely-sensible surveyor.

If your boat is used on inland waterways, the Boat Safety Scheme applies and that says that appliances fitted after 3 January 2000 must have automatic burner flame failure systems. I imagine yours was fitted before then... ;)

At my last insurance survey, the surveyor did not question the Flavell Vanessa stove (also without flame fail on the hob). The stove is the original, supplied with the boat when new in 1977. It is still in good condition, fully serviceable and, like you, we use simple procedure to ensure safe use. Long may it be so!
