I'm really interested in an earlier thread re the above which is apparently being scuttled in Whitsand Bay this coming weekend. About 10 years ago I bought a house called 'Scylla' (pronounced 'Cilla') from Vice Admiral Sir Lancelot Bell-Davies (a wonderful gentleman). He told me the house was named after a ship that his father had served on - his father was Admiral Sir Lancelot Bell-Davies. Apparently, his father built the house after the war and gave it rent free to his batman who served with him on 'Scylla' and the batman lived there until he died at the age of 92. We then bough the house, renovated it, lived in it for a few years, then sold it. I know nothing else about the history of 'Scylla' or the original Admiral so would be very interested to hear what anyone else knows. Thanks.

The Scylla being sunk is a Leander class frigate which was the last ship to be built at Devonport Naval Dockyard and was launched in 1968 and commissioned in 1970. The ship you are most likely to be interested in was the eariler Dido class crusier which served through the war and was broken up in 1958.

The info above is absolutely correct. The Scylla being scuttled (F71) was my home for 3 years (1977-1980) during which time she (and me) spent some 18 months deployed in the West Indies and North America. A brilliant ship with a brilliant ships company at the time.......sad to see her go this way........better than being made into razor blades though I suppose.
