My newly purchased moody has a Halyard HMI seal ! -
I know its out of production and not supported anymore but can anyone help please?
Does it need burping after the boat is taken out of the water please?
Anyone have a manual for it?
Where can I get spare seals from please?

Its not leaking and sems to be doing a good job but will be pulling out of the water in a couple of weks and want to check it over and service it if necessary.
Thanks

I've one too! Providing there is oil in the Reservoir I do not think you need to burp it. I have never done so and so far so good!
Halyard Marine tell me spares are no longer available. So when it fails it means another type of seal I am informed. Apparently the Marne Marine one is the most similar but I assume the PSS or similar will have to be the replacement if and when necessary.

I remember fitting one of these to my Varne 850. The only instruction I recall, was whilst
out of the water to remember to turn the prop shaft once a month. Other than that
it was just a case of keeping the oil reservoir topped up. Never had any problems with
it over a 12 year period.

I have something similar on a Weston 8500 (later version of the Varne) although the oil reservoir cap says "Vire". I've yet to take mine apart, but surely it's only a carrier for the seals, so if you replace the mounting hose and seals it should be as good as new?

So far (fingers crossed) I've not had any drop in the oil level, which would be the tell tale for a loss in performance.

Rob.

P.S. Must start looking for a seal supplier that does stainless versions!

The Halyard seal was withdrawn because it was unsatisfactory in service. I had one and despite a number of replacement seals, return to Halyard Engineering amd much confabulation we both agreed the struggle was so unequal that we should give up.

I will make the point, strongly, that Halyard were extremely supportive, did not try and escape their obligations and I continue to deal with them.

I would suggest you change to either the Volvo or (my preference) the PSS seal.

Finally, the Halyard seal does not need burping and, until it starts losing oil out of the reservoir, performs well.

I had one on my previous boat and and the current one, believe it's the original fitted in 1996. They do not need burping. The hoses onto the reservoir are welded so do not try and remove them. The ones on the seal itself do come off. It's a good idea to tighten the grub screws if needed. I removed the oil hoses from the unit, flushed it through with flushing oil and refilled as I'd heard about people removing them and finding them full of silt. Fingers crossed, I've not had any problems in use. Get the manual from Pye End.

I had one on a Westerly Fulmar. It did not need burping. It worked well. After 5 years it started using a little oil. Within another 6 months it failed completely on passage to the Scillies. Just managed to get back to home harbour by pumping bilge every 30 mins!

Just replacing my Volvo seal this year after 21 years of use. There is no noticeable problem with it - just thought I ought to do it!!!!

As a matter of interest, which bit failed?
