Hi,

I recently had a problem with the power steering on my boat... its a 24ft Rinker with a Bravo 3 sterndrive.

I posted a thread here: Bravo 3 steering issue....

This helpfully assisted me to fixing the problem - but now after replacing the helm and steering cable, the steering works perfectly except when I turn the steering fully clockwise and hold on full lock (to starboard pushing the cable and hence opening the hydraulic ram) - there is a hissing sound coming from the hydraulic system somewhere! This hissing only happens on full lock starboard - it doesn't do it the other way.

What is making the noise please? Should I worry about it or is it normal?

Many thanks for your help

By holding the steering hard over you are making the pump work hard so its just the hydraulics circulating the oil. You get the same if you hold a cars steering on full lock, you will hear the pump whining, these systems are a follow up system, the valve is only open from when you command a turn until the cylinder matches the input and the valve closes otherwise the cylinder would continue moving which is what its trying to do when you hold the steering fully over.

The steering is trying to respond to your command and go further than full lock. It can not so a relief valve has opened in the system. As soon as you hear that noise just back off slightly till it stops to get a longer life of the relief valve :)

Yeah. Wouldn’t do that much. As said…just the oil relief. Otherwise it would blow something badly.

check the oil level may be slightly low

If you do it for a long time the oil might heat up which might do damage.

Change the MIGHT to WILL.

Keep putting oil through a relief valve is a sure way of overheating it because of the restriction of the relief valve and the maximum pressure required to blow the valve off means everything is working at its maximum and this generates heat and as these systems are marginal they cannot effectively cool and overheated oil breaks down and loes a lot of lubricity.
