Hiscock - Beyond the West Horizon on Youtube

Sorry, shouldn't have been so pedantic, it would have done the job and held the ship in what was calm water.
[Note to self: stop being a nit-picking old git]

People finding fault is a risk you take when publishing photos of your sailing activities, even more so with video. Even if you're Eric Hiscock :)

They did pretty well out of that book -- and of course the others. And they deserved to. Regrettably Eric was a smoker, and eventually succumbed to lung cancer. They had been at that time living aboard at Whangarei in NZ's North Island. Susan sold up and moved back to the UK, where she bought a house and lived for some years longer. And when she died she left something over £3m to the RNLI....

Hi, everybody. I've been lurking for a while, I finally feel it's time to post something.

The Hiscocks' film is fascinating in so many ways. It is mis-captioned on YouTube, it isn't the 1952 voyage, it's the 1959 one as Eric says in his commentary. I dug out the book of the earlier voyage, "Around the World in Wanderer III", and it's a completely different route. I've noticed one thing; they seem to be wearing the same clothes! Three things spring to mind:
1) Clothes lasted much longer in those days.
2) They bought their clothes in bulk.
3) Styles stayed in fashion longer in the fifties.

In honour of their achievements we went and stood on the beam they, (or more probably Susan), donated to the restoration of Yarmouth Pier. Their beam, with their names on, is on the end landward of the fishermen's shelter!

Welcome Norm

Yeah, I noticed the mis-dating.

Re the same clothes, stuff was no doubt still being made to last in those days - and BO hadn't yet been invented by the marketing hoodlums.

I know this an old thread but I just wanted to alert those with a interest in this fabulous piece of film history, that someone has managed to acquire the copyright and you now have to pay to watch. Big shame.

Well it re-appears on youtube at regular intervals until it is blocked. Here is what it says on The Sailing Channel:-

Working with the Beaulieu Film and Video Library at the UK National Motor Museum Trust, TheSailingChannel.TV has restored “Beyond the West Horizon” and digitally remastered a surviving 16mm print to HD.

Just an if you don't know , Cruising under sail is one of two sailing bibles the other is voyaging under sail, there was a print run of both in one volume.

I would have rather they left it as it was - the iffy quality was all part of the charm.

Yes I would agree. The part of the film in africa where susan was not allowed in the mosque is quite interesting .Erics comments about ( paraphrase) not the friendliness place is more than a sign of things to come. However that whole town was destroyed by earthquake and 10000 killed a little while after their visit so I guess, that this might be the only film of that area . Wonder if there were any outtakes.

A film made by Eric and Susan Hiscock in 1959 has appeared on YouTube. Not technically one of the best sailing videos I've seen but a real piece of history. Look up "Beyond the West Horizon".

Not available apparently because of copyright issues.

I've just checked my playlist on YouTube where it's been for a couple of years ... 'Removed for copyright' etc ... I had a copy on video tape before it was stolen by a guy who was refurbishing one of my boats! (name supplied on request!) How much does it cost if you want to watch it?

The film was taken over 3 years the length of their voyage starting in 1956 . I believe someone from the bbbc arranged for the developing of the film reels in batches posted back he developed some of the photos in the forcabin
