This will probably be my last boat although I said that about the last one.Interested in advice on general assessment of a small yacht what little pointers that indicate possible problems that can be seen on the first inspection, one up from tyre kicking

For me, because of the average price of boats I buy (low .. 1 to 2K max), I look to
  1. standing rigging,
  2. sails,
  3. keels (bilge keel because of my mooring - encapsulated and the priority drops lower) and
  4. rudder assembly
...in that order... boats I buy usually are outboard powered (and I have one), and are not usually on a trailer (which is good as I don't need one) so that rules them out....

Check for rotting smells and see if you can put your fingers through any of the bulkheads.

Check the condition/accessibility of the chainplates

If the mast is deck-stepped check for compression under the mast foot.

Engine problems - look for signs of oil leaks, coolant leaks, mysterious stains. Put your hand on the engine before the seller starts it to see if he thought it prudent to warm it up first.
