Higher Latitudes

Just filing away loads of the Harbour Guides from YM and ST and planning next summer's cruise. From the last 2 or 3 years mags guess how many are for Northern latitudes? Only 2 I'm afraid, port Dinorwic and Kirkudbright. I'm sure I've missed a couple but there are dozens for the Southern UK and France. Only 1 for Holland, such a pity. No wonder you lot down South pay such high mooring rates!

I wonder if this finding is reflected in the geographic analysis of UK boat show visitors?

Let’s face it. I suspect 70% of everything in PBO, ST YM etc is about the stretch of coast from Poole to Portsmouth. Quite why, I can’t quite work out, I suppose because of the M3 it’s Surrey-by-the-Sea

My understanding was that after the South coast, Britains second most popular sailing area was the Clyde. When I passed through, there were boats and marinas all over the place which seems to justify this. When did we last see a harbour guide from there? Don't think I'm old enough to remember. Someone will probably remind me.

You are absolutely right. The magazines generally write like there is little worth bothering about beyond Lands End and Lowestoft, but I prefer the lack of interest because it means an abundance of space.

That is cos it is awful up north.

especially round the scottish islands. some poor misguided fools will tell of beautiful lochs and tiny islands with deserted beaches and quiet anchorages. Lies all lies. It always rains. oh and gales. its 'orrible too. you would not want to come.

stay in the solent. lovely there oooh yes. good value too.

If it F***s Flies or Floats. Rent it. For god's sake don't marry it.

I would have thought that the Thames Estuary/East Coast also has a high percentage of boats - say from Ramsgate to Lowestoft - but if your from the South Coast, don't bother coming - it's all sandbanks, v shallow and bars across the river entrances! -
joking really - every one is welcome.

Absolutely right

Dreadful place full of hairies flinging sporrans about and breeding haggis all over the place. North England just as bad, oiks with pet ferrets and black puddings saying "eee bah gum"

Stay in solent

They tell me Lymington and Port Solent are lovely, and ever so reasonable.

I quite agree. I went to Liverpool once and it was quite awful, could'nt understand a word of what they were on about and my handbag was stolen. Its the last time I go north of Watford. The natives are really horrible, smelly and abusive. I understand that one of the reasons that there are no charts is because there is no need for them, because the navigation is so easy anyway. Thats what Mr Kennedy told me when we were practising our navigation techniques together. He said go to Greece as it is much more of a challenge. So I did and I found it quite difficult so he must be right. I'm thinking of sailing to India this summer because all I need to do is go south and turn left when I get to the bottom of Africa.

No don't come up here to sail.. Just think of the midges.. reeaaally dreadful..
and if you set foot on land you are attacked by Limey disease carrying ticks the side of logs..
99% of the time you can't see any of the views for Scotch Mist or worse..
the tides and eddies are quite atrocious..
There are millions of uncharted rocks that lie just beneath the surface....
All the sea food has red tide (i.e. there are poisonious algae blooms all summer..) all those beautiful sea lochs with wilderness anchorages have been taken over by fish farms..
The locals are god fearing and nothing is open on Sunday..
Food is astronomical in price compared to the South and as for fuel.. 1 hour motoring would break a millionaires bank account..
DO NOT come up here for sailing..
P.S. the wind always blows in the wrong direction and there is always either too much or too little.
