A friend of mine is much taken with a Hi-star 42 from 1989/90 and has asked my opinion. If it had sails I would know what I was talking about, but as it doesn't, I don't. So, I thought I would wander over here and ask you guys what you thought.
1989 - £118,000? - Twin caterpillar 3208 - 1600 hours

Looks like a nice boat !

The best thing to do is go out on her and she how she feels also do lots of internet serches and talk to other owners as well as get a survey !

I would buy a similaer boat

One of a rash of Trawler yachts available during the 80's, mostly made in the Far East. Some are very well made and some less so.
You don't often see the HiStar for sale so may have been low volume.
Like any low volume boat, be aware it may be more difficult to sell than a production boat. Having said that you can sometimes buy at very advantageous prices for the same reason.
£118k does not seem that good a price to me and with 1600 hrs it has been well used. This is not necessarily a bad thing so long as it has been looked after.
For comparison with production boats of similar vintage; Princess 435 £120k
Fairline Turbo 36 £90k
Broom 37 £130k
Hatteras 43AC £130k

rhinorhino, I too think the price is too high even though HiStar is a reasonably well known make and is a lot of boat for it's length. As already mentioned, your friend could get a Princess 435 of similar vintage for this sort of money and that will look after his money much better apart from being an excellent boat
If your mate is really up for buying this Histar, then he should offer less than £100k and walk away if the buyer doesnt accept. There are 2 other points to consider. First, some Taiwanese boats of this era, not necessarily HiStar, did experience some osmosis problems and the second issue is the engines. The Cat 3208 is a reliable motor which was available in various power states from about 260hp to 425hp but the 425hp versions have experienced problems after 10yrs of service so, if the HiStar has these engines, they definitely need to be surveyed by a specialist engineer and oil sampled. This would be good practice with any boat of this age whatever the engines

Just thought I'd resurect this thread as I've pulled into Cobbs Quay to find my Late Fathers Hi Star 42 still named Triona , she's in a bit of a state , anyone know the new owners?
