HH VHF battery saga & seamarknunn

As the manufacturer of the faulty battery, I can confirm that Entel received this back from Seamark Nunn on Tuesday this week (Seamark Nunn received it on Monday of this week). It is now Friday - less than a week. As is usual with any manufacturer who receives back a product with an enexpected fault, the battery has been submitted for diagnostic tests. If the battery, which is still within warranty, is found to be genuinely faulty and this is not due to misuse by the end-user, it will be replaced immediately at the manufacturer's expense. We pride ourselves on offering a swift, friendly and courteous service, as does our agent, Seamark Nunn, who are certainly not to blame in any way. As with most things in life, it is usually best to wait and examine all the facts before shooting from the lip - so thank you and well done to those correspondents who have taken a more measured view of this unfortunate situation.

Brave of you stick stick your head above the parapet :D

If Will dropped the battery into Seamark Nunn's on Monday and posted here on Wednesday saying "I leave my H/held and dud battery with them & havn't heard anything for days." that does seem a wee bit impatient.

Hmmm!

In the light of the posts from Seamark Nunn and Entel, I withdraw unreservedly any actual or implied criticism that may have been inferred from my previous posts on this thread

Bru the Repentant

PS. Not gonna change my new sig though ... I'm not THAT repentant!

I believe ;) that Fox's Chandlery are also aware of statements here,as well

My experience of Standard Horizon handhelds is very good, and I'd certainly get another. I think in terms of features they're ahead of Icom, who for years were seen as the leading brand. If buying a handheld today, an essential feature for me would be a Li-Ion battery.

Also sad to report very sketchy service from Fox's Electronics people, although the rest of the chandlery staff are brilliant.

Not so fast......

This is what I was sent after my post on the forum:

Mr Patten,

Further to your 'YBW' rant which have just seen; which is unfortunate - as I go out my way to help our customers; please see my response - which unfortunately I can't post because of moderators 'murdoch' moderating! Please see my reply. To summarize; 1/ if you'd like us to solve the problem for you long-term, please allow the Entel evaluation of the battery to run it's course. I have every confidence they will rectify quickly. 2/ If you need a loaned radio for the weekend, not a problem. Let me know. 3/ If you would just like a refund on the replacement battery, not a problem. just let me know. 4/ If you have a grievance with myself and / or product(s) supplied let us know - director Andrew -

In response, this is what I emailed back:

Steve,

Thanks for your note & would like to clarify a few points.

1. I have no issue whatsoever in you responding on YBW & feel free to pass on my views to the moderators

2. I wouldn't describe my post as a 'rant'. It is factual and asking opinion of fellow local sailors.

3. My post (and subsequent posts) was about the merits of replacing the battery (i.e. getting a refund on the battery) & investing in a new H/H & also sharing my frustration at you failing to exchange the battery. You will note that there have been a number of replies, suggesting and recommending models.

4. I maintain that you tried selling me a new battery. To 'remind' you: You went & got a new packaged HH, lifted the battery from the box, went to the till and started ringing it up. It was at this point I advised that I had no intention of buying another battery & that as you seemed determined not to replace the battery FOC, I requested that you post back the HH once you had resolved with Entel. You confirmed that you would call Entel once they were back from lunch and that you would call me....& I dont think I have had any missed calls?

5. Having posted on the forum, you are now offering me options by email - yet you have already prescribed the option of sending the battery back to the manufacturer and declining a refund?. Seems the power of the forum works.

6. I take issue with your tone & use of emotive & condesending language such as 'taking a grown up approach'. That is not what I call good Customer service. I asked for a replacement then & there, on the day; and you flatly declined.

7. So given that you have chosen not to give a refund & send my HH battery back to the manufacturer, perhaps would you be kind enough to advise when Im likely to get my HH back....if it isnt too much trouble.

Best,

Will.

Thanks for the views on HHs.
Looks like the HX760E is the best option for me.
£270.42 from Foxs compared to .............£285.99 elsewhere.

Henry in Foxes reckoned it was more expensive in the shope because he was there giviing advice, personally I will stick to Seamark Nunn anytime.

Advice like where he insisted the Garmin GPSMap plotters had internal GPS antenna's lol

When i returned my faulty Raymarine plotter and insisted on a refund, rejecting it under the sale of goods act as unfit for purpose, he insisted it had to go back to Raymarine. He told me it would be best if i sent it back to them and dealt with them direct. I pointed out it was up to them to sort it and they reluctantly sent it back. I did have to deal with Raymarine in the end, as getting an sense out of Henry was impossible. I was messed around and insisted on a refund, Foxes said they would only issue one if Raymarine gave them a credit first, laughable.

He wouldn't quote me for Garmin replacements, i think he wanted to get rid of what he saw as an awkward customer. They then messed me about on the refund and i had to go down to the boat (86 miles each way) to return the power lead to them. He then wouldn't issue a refund because he said the online guy had to do it (i ordered it from the website, at a much cheaper price than in the shop, after i went into the shop and looked at it lol).

I made a fuss and pointed out online guy had promised a refund on receipt of the cable. After checking internal emails, there was indeed one from online guy, asking them to deal with the refund.

Both Henry and John then proceeded to very rudely take the piss about my choosing Garmin, saying it was inferior equipment and i should have stuck with Raymarine. Whilst they were taking the piss and slating Garmin, i did of course notice the extensive display of Garmin electronics on the shelf. They appear to stock more Garmin than anything.

Seamark Nunn did me a very good deal and i was happy to give them just over £2.5k.

I wasn't so happy when i installed it all and the radar wouldn't work though. Seamark Nunns answer was to arrange for a complete radar package to be delivered to my home, with no money or security from me. The deal was, i tried the cable and if that didn't cure it, fit the radome. Turned out to be the cable, so i dropped the brand new radome and faulty cable off to them. IMO, that was exceptional service and they will always be my first port of call when i visit a local chandlers.

Last winter I wanter a load of equipment (about £1.5k) for Karouise. Took same shopping list to Seamark Nunn and to Foxes - Foxes came up with a better deal.

Collected all equipment in one go (and got loads of discount on the savings card!). As I was going to install over a number of weekends I set up the kit at home to check how it went together etc. Couldn't get the VHF to work so went to see Henry. He sorted it straight away.

Have known and delt with Henry before when we was at Woolverstone and I had some work done on my very first boat. Always found him great to deal with.
