Rather than doing one of the RYA courses, you could get an instructor to give you a couple of days tuition on your own boat. They will concentrate on the bits you are most in need of help with, and give you huge confidence!
A long 10 years ago, we bought our first boat in Suffolk Yacht Harbour. We were not complete novices, but almost! We got a couple of days own boat tuition, and just 2 months later sailed to Denmark and back! The own boat tuition made all the difference!

Yes. It all went exactly to plan - no hanging around waiting for suitable weather, like nearly every other time we have crossed the North Sea!

Someone else on here suggested the same, so going to look for an instructor to do that.
What kind of boat do you have? I only have a little vivacity 650, not sure it's capable of getting across the North Sea.

No, I wasn't suggesting you crossed the North Sea although I am sure your boat is capable of it. I told that story to show how much confidence two days of own boat tuition gave us. In retrospect, I think we were very very naive, and it was lucky that everything went well. Since then, we have sailed a lot and are still making plenty of mistakes and ,I hope, learning from them.

Hi Boogaloo and welcome , the forum is great for advice/help , are you doing any shore based courses ? , they will be starting soon at colleges etc and can keep your enthusiasm going over those cold, wet winter evenings , we like Pinmill and the pub , enjoy your boat and keep it fun .

One thing I've picked up over the years is that most boats are capable of the crossing, it's people like me that aren't. Mostly down to experience and that can sometimes be painful, best experienced somewhere a bit better than the open sea. Or in my case, the Wash. The Orwell is a great place to learn and gain experience, my plan would be to aim for the end target of a trip round Rough Tower, but before then I'd want to get used to sailing in more sheltered waters, get used to the feel of how she handles and what happens if something happens that's unexpected, like hitting the bottom

currently im not even capable of crossing from one side of the orwell to the other other, let alone the north sea.
I am thinking of just driving my boat up to ipswich on just the outboard motor..... surely it would manage it?
