I'm trying to update my o-charts for opencpn, the o-charts site says I must have the updated plugin, oesenc_pi-1.6.0-win32.exe.

I currently have version 1.2 and Opencpn version 4.8.10203 build 2018-02-03, which I think is the near release version of 4.8.

The problem is that Norton doesn't like the file "oesenc_pi-1.6.0-win32.exe" and automatically deletes it, saying has less than 100 Norton users and it's a new file, so has no history.

I can override Norton and install the new plugin, but I thought I check with the forum to see if there are any know issues with the new plugin, before I install it.

I do not know the file, but I had endless problems with Norton treating anything it did not recognise as a virus. Endless until I just uninstalled all the Norton software. I now just use Windows Defender which is inbuilt in Windows 10 and makes paid for antivirus programs into a waste of money as well as a potential obstruction.

I have similar file problems sometimes with AVG but at least they take a copy for analysis and report back when it's been OK'd.

TBH I don't think there's any risk with plug-ins downloaded directly from the OpenCPN web site. I think I updated to oesenc_pi-1.6.0 a while back with no problems at all

As an ex-IT security kind of guy I agree that Norton more than most has a habit of knowing whats best for your PC... I'd say you're pretty safe to disable it to install. Not sure I agree about Win Defender, but each to his own on that. FWIW, now retired I use the recently maligned Kaspersky and Opencpn without any apparent problems but I'm sure the Russians are keeping an eye on me !

Update,

I added the file name of the plugin to Norton's safe file list, and downloaded and installed it.

Adding the file to the safe list, means I didn't have to disable Norton, which minimises the risk, I suppose I should now remove it from the safe list, but I don't think that a plugin for opencpn is much of a risk.

I then downloaded the latest version of o-charts and installed them, more than 1Gig of data, and it all works OK.
