Re: Always = sometimes

That's strange, I always thort the depreciation on Fords was considerably more than most other makes!

Your order choice is spot on.

Yanmars for year in, year out, reliability.

The new D6 sounds good but no track record yet.

Cummins are very, very powerful but road units have had problems.

The two best marine engines in my humble opinion are Cats and Yanmars.

This may be anecdotal, but a boaty chum told me that his chums Lochin or something similer was out of commision for months and months due to Yanmar being unable to source some engine component or other.Poss some sort of rubber bush or other.Last time he buys the make of diesel. At least with V....o or Ford you can nip round the corner and get the bits.

No doubt they have thier upside but I have heard a real horror story of problems on a boat i.e. occaisional sudden loss of power in one engine at high speed - not good on the trim! Cost to repair/replace sounded outrageous. All anecdotal mind, but might be worth bearing in mind.

Update

Thanks for the responses to date, and it would appear that my first choice of Yanmar is winning the popularity stakes. Latest news is:
Volvo D6 is out of the running if I go with shafts. The boat must be ready before the end of the year because it is going to the showboat at London, (very nice discount), and the V Drive unit will not be available until next year according to Volvo.
Cummins price is being looked into by manufacturer since I complained about the large premium. Checked price at Southampton and only £500 dearer than KAD300, and I was offered a 30% discount on the spot without haggling.
Decision on Yanmar availability by 3rd October, but should have better idea on 18th Sept as American Representative is visiting Southampton Show.
