Help with deliveryskipper

Have someone heard of this company. I need a boat delivered from Southampton to Norway. Ive been in contact with this company. Just wonder if someone know them

http://www.yachtskipper4u.co.uk/

It is an agency, so the skipper will likely be an independent self employed person. So you need to look at the CV of the person(s) they propose using for your delivery. Particularly important if you are going along as crew. There are many such agencies operating in the UK.

Make absolutely sure that the skipper guarantees to sail the boat when there is wind. Every delivery skipper I've known, except one, motors flat out all the way on the most direct course. You pay the fuel bills and the engine wear. If you want the one I'll let you know who he is, his experince includes skippering one of the Clipper boats.

is the skippers name Des by any chance?

Don't think so, from the linked website the proprietor's name is Sven Taylor. I had the horrible thought it might be a new phoenix company for RM but it would seem not...

Halcyon who posts on here does deliveries. Try a PM to him.

I got Halcyon to quote for a delivery but my purchase fell through. Pete was very good to deal with, gave a very detailed email quote by return, and I felt that I was dealing with a very professional firm.

Hi. Many thanks for seeking fellow sailors advise on www.yachtskipper4u.co.uk before choosing a yacht delivery company.

Some very valid points have been made in this blog and I apologise for not responding sooner.

DELIVERING UNDER MOTOR

There are namely 2 factors to consider:

There are the clients who have a personal schedule for their prised possession and more often than not are asking for exact arrival dates before the vessel has even left port. For these clients I have always made it clear if I need to use the motor in order to keep my average daily mileage up, thus being able to give more accurate arrival times and allowing the client to pre-book any flights and transfers to arrive before or after his vessel has safely reached the desired port.

Secondly, we all understand that it's a practical impossibility to predict weather when scheduling a yacht delivery many months before the vessel is collected. As a rule we aim to sail as far, and as often as we can. Quite often into adverse weather conditions as we don't get paid anything extra for weather delays.

OUR POLICY

Our policy is NOT to charge for weather delays. This really is something that should be considered especially on routes up the North sea, Biscay, Gibraltar, Gulf stream and trans ocean.

I think where I, and my companies agenda lay is that I am a wooden boat owner. Over the 20+ years I have faced many challenging situations both on Private yachts, solo sailing, and on charter yachts over 20 meters. It's therefore a great sense of achievement to complete a vessel delivery and receive glowing recommendations, and we all know that a skipper is only as good as his last job. Over the years I have spent in the yachting industry I have found a market where I feel I can give fellow boat owners a real and fair quote that's emailed with a breakdown of all expected costs. The quote is clear and concise and FINAL. The price you are quoted is the final price you pay subject to the vessel being in a safe and sea worthy condition.

NO DES OR DEB actively or previously worked for us.

And lastly I have looked at some of our competitors quotes, terms and conditions as well as having an inside information on what the crew are paid and how many of the crew are in fact paying the delivery company to gain mileage and sea time. I will usually offer the 3rd crew member free to the client (excl flights, transfers and provisions) and in turn offer the position to a "milebuilder." This helps reduce the cost to the client and sometimes I gain valuable new crew members to join our team. You will also note that most DO charge for weather delays. I urge you to do the multiplication with an average crew of 3 weather bound for, lets say a week?

I hope you found this informative and I welcome any comments and suggestions you might have, so feel free to message me directly at yachtskipper4u@gmail.com or contact me via the website at www.yachtskipper4u.co.uk.

Kind regards and fair winds.

Capt. S. Taylor

Does his reputation proceed him? Is he excellent or rubbish?
Hi sam and fellow forum members.

Well, that is the "big question."

Having been captain and project manger on many major yacht refits some in excess of $250k and many years working under some incredibly experienced captains, mentors and employers I would consider myself somewhat more than you lowest level of expectations of me and the industry I have worked in for almost 25 years.

I implore you to consider that I purchased a wooden vessel that had been dry stored for 16yrs (in Southampton) and single handedly refitted it to a safe, seaworthy and insurable condition within 3 months. I then sailed mostly single handed to it's current location in Portugal after seriously fracturing my leg (which is now conveniently reinforced with titanium and causes me to get closely searched at airport metal detectors) and leaving Viveiro (Spain) solo still on 1 crutch. This should say something about my character and determination.

My motto is: "There are no problems. Only solutions!"

A little more about me that isn't advertised and little known. At the age of 1 (Late 1971), I accompanied my mother on a RM ship to Cape Town where my father was posted in the training of T.V broadcasters and management. I spent weekends and summer holidays sailing at places like Vaal dam and ocean sailing in Richards Bay and Durban. In my early years I spent many years in boarding school and since I was nationalised as a South African citizen I was duly drafted in the national service. Throughout my time in school I was a member of the school sailing club taking part in field trips and weekly training and have retained my passion for sailing wherever in the world I've been based over the years.

I'm by no means frightened by hard work, sometimes in gruelling conditions and almost never lose focus on the task assigned to me.

We all know that some forum threads can be useful and informative. It's fantastic that this thread was started by someone seriously looking for useful advise. I can only hope that the continuation of this thread will help anyone considering having there yacht delivered a good insight into the procedure, and help them choose a company that provides fully insured yacht delivery skippers at a very competitive rate with the knowledge that the price quoted is the final price paid (excl repairs and associated charges), and furthermore won't be charged for weather delays and the crew are paid fairly.

In short, the yacht crew I know and work with sail primarily for the love. Getting paid to do it is a pleasure. The many problems that arise on long passages require mariners that can adapt and find a working solution. For this reason I have some fantastic friends and colleagues that share the passion for solving situations as they arise. I guess we're a different breed focusing on preventative maintenance and sleeping with 1 eye open and both ears pricked. It is quite amazing how in tune with our vessel we become. We feel the change in wind, the swing on anchor and of course the fishing vessels at 03h00 passing the tranquil anchorage.

This in mind I bid you all fair winds and safe sailing.

Kind regards

Sven Taylor

Hi again John.

I believe we might have spoken before regarding a previous client of ours who purchased a Nauticat and wanted it delivered from Gosport to the Med. He then sold his other Nauticat which I delivered from Palma to Slovenia.

Does this ring a bell with you?

Kind regards
Sven

Hi. Last year I sailed on 8 deliveries with yachtskipper4u. I was very impressed how they conducted the delivery and learned that the propriator does most deliveries and pays the crew fairly. I have done deliveries with a company mentioned above and found that the crew are NOT paid fairly and often not paid at all. I would highly reccomend them and suggest you drop them a line since they have many discounts available and all crew are FULLY INSURED to deliver your yacht. The propriator has an impressive resume too having run charter vessels up to 85ft and been sailing proffessionally since the age of 16!!
