For the last few years there has been an ECF Christmas quiz. We have really enjoyed doing it, and hence have won it a couple of times. But few other people have had a go, except Lisa, of course. So, since it is our turn to set it, perhaps we can try something that more people will have a go at.

How about a "where is it?" quiz?

If you would like to send me one or two photos of East Coast scenes, then I will put a "where is it?" quiz together. I will make sure that you do not get credit for knowing where your own photos were taken, though.

We can have some groupings like
East coast in 2012
Historic East Coast
East Coast of another country
And any other that occurs to me or you suggest in posts below.

I could put it together during November, so that you can have the Christmas period to puzzle out the answers, and the prize (a spectacular alcoholic prize, that some of you may recognise) will be awarded at the Fitting up dinner.

If I am overwhelmed by a lack of interest, then we'll allow this venerable ECF tradition to die.

Please send your photos to Alison.mainwood<at>gmail.com, where <at>is the usual symbol.

Ali

Thanks to the 4 people who have sent me photos. There are some lovely and quite puzzling ones.

The quiz will be pretty thin unless I get a few more - it would just be those excellent few plus a whole lot reflecting our own wanderings!

So, I am coming to the conclusion that not enough people are particularly bothered.

If you send me a few more photos, then I'll go ahead. If you don't, then we'll have to allow this venerable ECF tradition expire.

Anything I;ve got that's worth looking at has been up on my public galleries for months anyway and in any case, looking through, wouldn't present much of a challenge to the knowledgeable denizens hereabouts unless it was really obscure - like I've got pictures that just show water :p (mind you, wouldn;t surprise my if some smart **** came back with "Ar, that'll be the Wallet just south of Walton Pier, you can tell by the colour of the water"

No, none from you, Simon (marmalade). Try again, zip files are ok, or several small emails.

Thanks for all the others people have sent. We have a nice, but possibly quite difficult, quiz coming up.

I thought that the main clue would be who sent them in... for example, Tillergirl is mainly located around the Blackwater with occasional forays across the Thames estuary, but Glayva has been to some very distant lands. But I will say whether they are on the East Coast defined as Gibraltar Point to North Foreland or further afield.

Didn't realise you welcomed submissions fom further afield.
Are you pretty much set now, or do you want me to see what I can dig up?

I suggested "east coast of another country" as one category and there have been a few sent in. I might have to get the atlas out to make sure some of them qualify, though. I thought it may add interest to have a few holiday snaps as well as the usual muddy creeks, but I would expect the foreign ones to include a few more identifiable features than the muddy creeks.

I now have quite a lot, but another one or two would be very welcome.

Well done for volunteering.

I think it would be good if you had some other type(s) of questions, too. It would make it more inclusive for those who only know one part of the area (or are new to it).

Not sure what that would be, offhand, but I'll try to think of some (or something) to send for your consideration. Maybe others could, too?

For the last 3 years we have had Christmas quizzes with other types of questions. The problem was that very few people tried them. I expect you can look back and find last year's quiz set by Lisa (chattinglil) and the previous one set by us, and the one before that set by Roger Gaspar (tiller girl). To try to get more people involved, in answering as well as setting it, I suggested the "where is it" format.

I will try to get a mixture of questions from the obvious (if you've been there), to the puzzling (even if you've been there) to the frankly impossible. All of those are amenable to blind guesses - why not!

If that sounds discouraging, its not meant to be - if you have suggestions, please let me know, or set another quiz. The first and only rule of the ECF is "NO RULES", and consequently, no organisers of , well, anything much, but things continue to happen and organise themselves.

Oops. Sorry!:o

Thank you, everyone who sent in photos. As you can see, I have now compiled the quiz, thanks to you.

If I haven't included yours, sorry. It may have been because I had another from the same place, or I thought it was too easy, or too difficult, or simply felt the quiz was getting a bit big by that time. However, I really did appreciate you sending it to me.

Please try the quiz anyway. I will try to disallow you from identifying your own photos, but I will take that into account when I give you a score, by some complex calculation.
