Is it possible to install the "Boating" app on an iPad, purchase a chart coverage, and after some time transfer all the stuff (app+charts) to another iPad?

I am asking because, also in case anyone else is interested, the whole Med coverage is on offer at Eur 8.99 till Sunday (btw, before any Solent boater asks, sorry folks, but afaik the offer is for Med charts only), which makes purchasing it practically a no brainer.
But the iPad on which I could install the app and purchase the chart coverage is not the same where I would like to actually use the app - i.e. another one which I have at home, and which I can't access before the offer ends...

Thanks in advance!

Cant answer specifically for the ipad, but that is how it works on android devices. Once you have paid for it and the charts you can just download it again at no charge on any future devices you own,as long as those devices use the same account as the device you originally bought it under

I have moved mine across 3 phones now over the last few years.

I have not tried this with the Navionics app specifically, but if the second iPad is using the same iTunes account, then you could either "Sync" the iPad to a PC / Mac with iTunes, then push it to the second iPad and download the charts, or simply download it all again from the iTunes store - it's your iTunes account that buys the app, not the iPad.

As long as each iPad is signed into the same Apple account, all apps paid for or can be used on both devices.

I will google just to double check

Should be fine and based on your iTunes details.
If you purchase and install on your iOS device now, you will probably still get the ‘buy now’ prompt when you do the Ipad install but on clicking that it will indicate something like, ‘you’re already purchased this app - download now’.

Obviously your ipad needs to be cell version to get the best performance.

I’ve certainly brought the app across from one device to another, so unless they’ve changed policy...should be ok.

Regards

Many thanks everybody, that's actually what I expected, but thought to double check if the general principle still stands with this specific app.

Apropos, there's another app-specific thing I'm not sure of: when the yearly subscription ends, if you don't renew it, I guess the possibility to update the charts is lost (obviously), but does also the whole app with the already downloaded charts stop working, or can you still use it?

Tx again

You lose all the detail....afair

No you don't!

Existing charts are still usable, but you lose the ability to update any existing charts that you already downloaded, although what's to stop you simply uninstalling the app and downloading again, I'm not sure - you might be missing community edits.
Also you lose dock-to-dock Autorouting, Navigation Module, Advanced Map Options, Plotter Sync, Weather & Tides, Timeline.

My subscription has expired, but I had only downloaded a small area.
Post-expiration I recently downloaded a much larger area which is all up to date :)

I will most probably re-activate my subscription at the start of next season.

Fp is correct, after the subscription ends you just lose the ability to download updates, you can still download areas of chart you havent previously downloaded,or an entire chart to a new device.

Those are all the things I use ! But I mistakingly thought that you were not able to bring the detail down so good shout for the OP.

Yes, I use quite a few of those too.
I will be re-subscribing for next season - I think you get quite a lot for the money.

100% agreed, all Med charts plus autorouting etc. at 9 Eur is indeed an amazing value, and I might well keep the subscription also in the years to come.

Otoh, for route planning (which so far I did with Garmin charts and nRoute app on the PC) in my usual cruising grounds, none of the advanced functionalities are so important, and neither are updated charts - hence my question.

But interestingly, next summer will be a bit of an exception, because among all areas I cruised, if there's one where autorouting makes a lot of sense, that's the Croatian Archipelago - and in my delivery trip I'll make all of it!
In fact, already back in the mid 90s, when I began cruising that area, I immediately wondered why nobody ever thought to include such functionality on chartplotters.
Eventually, it looks like I'll have an opportunity to enjoy such convenience in 2018...!

Yet another question...

...considering how well some folks know the app, could you also confirm what the difference is between the plain "Boating" app and the "Boating HD" version?

I'm a bit puzzled also because in the meantime I already downloaded the non-HD app, and even before downloading/buying any map, I checked a few spots that I know very well, in several different areas of the Med (and also around S'hampton!), and I seem to have a very decent coverage anywhere...!?!

Re: Yet another question...

HD version is optimised for an iPad. Non-HD version is optimised for iPhone - it's mostly about the screen size, also if you buy for iPhone and iPad (two apps), the app vendor makes more money :)

LOL, yeah, I suspected that. :D
But if the non-HD version I just tried on my Android phone with its 5" screen is anything to go by, it should be fine also on the iPad I was eventually thinking to use, I reckon.
Do you think the non-HD would be OK on a 9.7" 3rd gen iPad?

If you try it, I think you will see what I mean - things like menus and buttons will get a bit chunky.
It's probably usable, but the HD version will look a lot better.

Re: Yet another question...

I have Europe HD and UK non-HD on an ipad, and Europe non-HD on my I-phone. Comparing the Europe HD (ipad) with Europe non-HD (iPhone) side by side, there's no difference - the level of detail seems to be identical at any scale, as does the resolution. The non-HD actually has some extra soundings, but that may just be in set-up.

However, comparing the Europe HD (ipad) with UK non-HD (ipad), the resolution on the non-HD is much worse, looks a bit blocky, and it doesn't fill the ipad screen, there is an approx. 1cm blacked out border all round.

Seems to support FP's view that HD is for ipad, and non-HD for iPhone.

Re: Yet another question...

Aha, understood, thanks. Maybe they purposely limited the resolution of the non-HD version.
I guess full HD could be its limit, 'cause on my 1080p Android device the non-HD demo which I downloaded is just perfect...
