I met a couple in Inverness who had come south for the winter - from Spitzbergen!!
Their steel hull was insulated with neoprene. They were pretty pleased with it.

I like that idea, but I bet it would cost a wad, let alone for a thickness that's worthwhile/

No.
Hydrophilic (note the spelling) means attracting water, as opposed to hydrophobic which means repelling water. More to do with surface tension and wetting angle than absorption.
And me, I have my own angle and frequently foam at the mouth.
