Westpoint is about the only place that knows about and has spares for Parsons boxes. The usual problem is that the brake band that controls the epicyclic gear housing for forward and reverse gearing wears and starts slipping. The same happens if friction modifiers such as Molyslip are added, the brake band no longer holds properly. This often has the effect of cancelling out the neutral position so the box goes straight from forward to reverse, with difficulty changing the gear and sometimes like yours making one gear impossible to select. Otherwise the selector mech itself may be out of adjustment, which is a simple adjustment in situ on the box - though I dont have the details any longer.

Westpoint can supply or replace the brake band. Give them a ring they can usually tell you what is wrong from your description, and how much it will cost to repair.
