hi folks
my honda 2.3hp 4 stoke outboard won't fit onto the dinghy transom because the transom is to thick for the outboard bracket (not sure if you call it a bracket or not). The transom is about 7mm too thick.

can anyone think of an obvious solution other than buying a new outboard?

The transom is made of grp.transom.jpg

thanks

I would assume that most outboards use a std G clamp diamension but it’s only assumption
Worth checking before you leap
Has the dinghy and marks indicating previous fitting?

Hi scott I was using a 9.8hp tohatsu on it before.
It only just fitted but it had an extra 1cm of clearance at the clamp screws

Annoying !

Cutting away a section of transom and bolting on a wooden board might be a option but it depends entirely on the dinghy transom construction .

Photo of dinghy transom .............. ???????

My Honda 2.3 didn’t fit on my Highfield rib either. The dealer, who was both a Highfield and a Honda dealer, said it’s normal. The Highfield had plastic transom pads, so I just filed in a couple of slots to fit the adjustable g clamps

Thanks bouba
Yeah I think I'll just have to cut out 2 channels in the transom just deep enough to let it slide over
Makes me wonder why they don't make the clamps with a bit more clearance if it's a regular thing !

Cutting the transom seems rather drastic!
Depending how far you are going in the dinghy (ie just to your mooring) would it not be possible to clamp a piece of thick ply to the top of the transom and then locate the outboard bracket on this? Obviously this would probably not be secure enough if you plan to plane across the Channel!! It also would depend on having enough depth for the motor.

If you bolt a bracket like this you can get the outboard at the correct height

It's a tricky one.

I'd see if I can buy another outboard clamp either from a scrap engine or second hand (there must be millions of these Hondas) or even ask the price of a new one ... and then modify the older clamp with an angle grinder and some metal epoxy. If it all goes tits-up, at least I've got a replacement. :ambivalence:

Richard

Yeah was going to try that Richard but the clamp doesn't look like it will be that suitable to modify
I think it might just make more sense to cut a couple of sections out of the transom
Cheers
