/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Hello to everyone, I`ve enjoyed reading the forum for ages as an `Anonymous`, but now the time has come for me to spend an hour figuring out how to register so that I can ask for your help. I have black carbon fibre type panels which make up the dash board on my T43. Unfortunately they have all started to warp and wear, and just generally look scruffy. does anybody know were I can find replacements? or probably better still a suitable alternative? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif there that should do it ... that wasn`t so bad.

Well, I say carbon fibre, what I really mean is looky likey carbon fibre ... bit like plastic really. Haven`t ruled out the leatherete covered plywood yet ....

You could get original spare parts from Fairline. Person to ask is the very helpful Tina at Peters in Ipswich (not chichester). That's in UK. She will tell you price/availability and will organise supply of Fairline spares

hiya. They may probly be carbon fibre-effect aluminium. Fairline shd have the spares but may otherwise be able to give you the supplier.

However, as it is designed by fairlinies all from the same coventry polytechnic who have only the lightest grasp of engineering and materials selection, and have never been to sea, there will almost certainly be better material choice available. In fact there may not be a worse one - I wd have suggested marine ply covered with real leather, but that stands up rather well, so far. This problem is very regular, over lots of models, and so of course they have continued to use the blimmin stuff and have never thought to have a better idea.

It should be possible to find a local place that will clean and polish and anodise the existing lumps of aluminium for you. Then you can have it any colour - even a quite tasteful one provided of course that it doesn't clash with regulation fairline green or blue friggin tartan which i do hope the Good Lord has spared your particular craft?...

Hi! new to the forum myself but not yet made introductions. I am currently replacing the dash panels on a Targa 30/33 and using the supplier that Fairline used. Contact Axon Components on 01977 681781 and speak to Tim. They can supply Aluminum replacements with all finshes. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, this is just what I am after. have you received your replacement panels from them yet?

It took a while to get their details and I am trying to find a similar Targa 30/33 with diesel instruments so I can copy the layout to them as the Petrol set up was different. They are very keen and awaiting my instructions as they have the old panels already as templates for the new ones.
I am not sure they make the current range of panels for Fairline but its all made to order, either way I am sure they can help

Steve

Hi Pete, they don't have a Website unfortunately. I spent many an hour with obscure searches to locate a company that made these panels, eventually got their name and was very pleased that it was the Fairline panels that they made in the past.

Could I nominate you for understatement of the year :)

Keep smiling

Henry :)

Haha I know, but in my experience the dash something that people look into replacing, but put it off because of the potential work involved... I know i've been putting it off on mine, and it's only a tiny boat, nothing like the size of a Fairline Targa.

Paul.

Perfect timing,as the next job on our to do list,we have a fairline squadrom 52 and swmbo has stated that the fly bridge dash is looking a bit weathered and warn, what would other's choose if upgrading the blue covered aluminium, not looking to alter layout.

Targa 43 dash recover

I had the same problem on my Targa 43 when I bought it. I took all the aluminium covered panels off (except the steering wheel one as I didn't want to dismantle the hydraulic hoses). The carbon fibre ( and it really is) mostly just cracked off with little effort. The big panel with all the instruments on needed to be sanded off with a disc sander in a drill.

I recovered them with 3M Carbon Fibre film. Sounds a bit Max Power however I spent a lot of time looking at various makes (mostly rubbish). Sunseeker seem to agree with me though as they have just covered the top of one of their new mega yachts with the same stuff. I believe 3M claim it should be good for 10+ years in med sunshine. I bought it from a company in leeds who wrap cars and vans in fancy plastic coatings. It has a matt finish and the weave effect is impressed in the surface.

Cost @ £60 m2. It took me a weekend with 1.5 m2. Its been on 4 years now and still looks very smart. Its not like sticky back plastic, as you can warm it gently and stretch it over edges and shape it around corners really easily. The weave effect stretches with it so if you look closely it looks like it has been formed and moulded.

Once everything is screwed back down you would never know - Ive got a few piccies some where if you want to see.

found the pictures

found the piccy - taken with a mobile phone but you get the idea, actually the 3M film has lasted much better than the fancy new fairline steering wheel - that has corroded very quickly very disappointing.

Hi Kashurst
Thanks for reply,I looked at using something similar, but was concerned as would be subject to some harsh conditions being exposed on fly bridge, the clip I watched on u tube clip was for a car dash, The 3M product that you have used sounds just the job,be interested in seeing what it looks like if you can find pic's ,I will have to do the same re before and after, now of to search 3M site :)

I wondered how long it would last but for £60 its worth a go, the worst that could happen is that it would need re-doing. I didn't take the engine instruments out the panels either. As this stuff re-flows under gentle heat, I stuck the film on top of everything, rubbed it down with a clean cloth then warmed it with a heat gun. The film softens and flows down into all the little gaps around the dials and warning light panels.

Let it cool off for a few minutes then go around the dials and lights with a scalpel and peel off the bit you don't want. That's what made it so easy. The big instruments like the plotter etc I did remove as they come out easily.

missed your last post must have been the speed of my typing, also considering changing steering wheel, was your new one from fairline,by the way dash looks very good, thanks for pic.

yes the steering wheel was from Fairline but that design/make was popular on a lot of boat manufacturers a few years ago. Sorry I don't know who makes it but I wouldn't buy another one. The original Fairline wheel with 3 spokes didn't have a mark on it after ten years, The new one lasted 6 weeks.
