Hi can anyone help me , I have a 1989 Carver Montego with a 4.3 Volvo AQ205 A Engine, the raw water pump has been leaking and today whilst the boat is still out of the water I decided to try and remove the pump, I removed the impeller, and the bracket that secures the pump to the engine block, but I can’t seem to be able to move the Impeller housing off of the shaft, the bearing carrier is bolted to the crank shaft pulley via 3 bolts, but these bolts are so close to the housing that I can’t get a socket on them?? Should the impeller housing just pull off the shaft or am I missing something else?? Any help would be very gratefully appreciated

I don't know the engine but here is a link with exploded diagram which may help. http://www.volvopentashop.com/Volsp...asolineEngines/7742810/7742810_26/7742810_009

Looks like a splined shaft, so should pull off the bearing carrier.

You Do need to undo the 3 bolts and the hoses to get the pump off but don't need to take the impeller out.

The splined shaft is only about 1/2" long so once the bolts are out it is just a tap.

I found that if you remove the raw water pipe you should be able to get a socket and extension bar to the bolts but you may have to rotate the crank a bit to get at them all.

If you dont fancy the rebuild Key Part are doing a replacement pump which is from the OEM for £180 plus VAT. Problem with the rebuild you will find is that if the shaft is marked you can only get it from VP and it is a lot more than the whole pump from Key Part.

You may be able to rebuild them with a set of bearings and a new seal, from a bearing/seal supplier.

I did this with mine (TAMD40's) - make sure to specify salt water for the seal (that means a stainless spring, and the correct material - I think that may be neoprene, but I forget. The suppliers will be able to tell you).

Total cost is around 25 pounds per pump.

If the shaft is 'cut' from the old seal, you may be able to fractionally move the shaft forward or backward (by pressing the bearings on further, or less). The seal with then run on a new part of the shaft.

If the water pump cover is badly worn, you can use an ice-cream container to make a running surface (the same size, shape and bolt holes as the cover).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Paul

I looked at a rebuild and by the time you had bought the bits including a new impeller kit it wasn't worth the agro, the new pump also comes with a new impeller.
