Help needed. Kubota V1505 Had a fit.

Hi,
Ive an engine at home (not entirely boat related.)Its a Kubota V1505 baulk standard 4 cyl diesel. was running fine. then it over revved. would not turn off, then stopped. Tried to restart it and now luck. removed injector pipes and when I turn it over only diesel from one pipe. I know little about this type of engine or the pump, but I was thinking fuel starvation. would a diesel over rev when no fuel being pumped thru.
Any advice appreciated.

Not worn rings and burning lubrication oil? Becomes an unstoppable runaway until it self destructs?
Urm. not seamed to use too much topping up of engine oil. However its no spring chicken. I wondered if it could be a faulty fuel cut off solonoid. Not sure why it would run on though, but it might account for the fuel not pumping out the injectors. Think a compression test is in order.

How long was it running away? A runaway engine is not controlled by the governor in the injection pump and will exceed the maximum safe revs.
It usually occurs because the sump oil finds a way into the combustion chambers via a breather and gets burnt adding to the engine speed which feeds more oil and so on.
How did it stop? On its own? or did you stop it and how did you do so?
There is probably severe mechanical damage.
 
Well not sure it overan now. Took stop solonoid out. And the valve inside the pump did not come out. So tapped it and cranked it and it runs poorly.
wondering if it’s low pressure not forcing the valve to open and run.

don’t want to condem engine too quick. Any further thoughts appreciated

Could be the injector pump, had similar with Beta engine (Similar). Broken Spring. Quite easy to take apart with care. Photo or note each move. Have clean surface to lay out parts.

the stop solonoid works fine. with it removed the fuel cut off rod returns to off. when you start the engine it goes in on its own hence why it wont shut off. When it starts it just runs full power with no throttle control. looks like im going to be watching some youtube films on pumps.

First thing that comes to mind is the very dangerous runaway occurrence. Where the engine is fuelled uncontrollably by its own oil. But the mention of you stopping it manually at the solenoid, perhaps suggests otherwise.
Anyway…before we get to thought of any kind…can I ask more around the details ?
When it over revved…do you mean on its own from idle up to high rpm? Or was it in gear and underway?
Or did it instantly climb rpm from the minute you started it ?
sounds like a fuel pump,throttle or similar issue.

Forget the runaway by burning its own oil scenario. You have proved it isnt that by manually stopping it. If it is running on full power with no manual control it probably means that the connection between the throttle and governor is disconnected internally .... or .... the governor has cratered or the stop solenoid is doing weird things. The throttle on a diesel controls the governor speed control. So set it at say 1000 rpm and the governor will control the amount of fuel injected to maintain those revs as the load comes on and off. If it is running at full chat then the control of the governor has gone.
 
But you said it over revved. Did it or did it just rev to the governor limit?

Update.
ok, it did rev very high and would not shut down. had to pull fuel pipe off. checked fuel stop solonoid and it was working. A little research on the interweb and found posts stating if one valve was blocked could lead to the machine not shutting off and lead to the machine reving high.

So pulled this very simple in design pump out. 15 min job. found 3 screws loose that hold the fuel slider in place. The slider has keys that operate each valve . one was not located properly. refitted the rail or slider properly. refitted the screws and the machine runs perfectly and shuts off. That was lucky, nearly spent £18,000 on a new machine. Cost of repair £0

My cousin had borrowed my digger for a week & 3 years later still had it. We decided he would sell it & on the morning of the buyer arriving, he went to move it onto the drive. The Kubota engine did exactly the same thing. It suddenly revved like hell. He stopped it by stuffing a rag over the air intake.
Needless to say, he cancelled the sale. I do not recall how he solved the issue, but it was a result; because he then took it to auction & got I £2K more than the original sale. Seems mini diggers are in short supply.
 
Reminds me of the time many years ago, I was working on a Lister diesel which had been fitted with a hydraulic pump to power some equipment. I started the engine and then operated the hydraulic lever and nothing happened..... then the engine ran away with clouds of dense white smoke, the stop control didn't work and in desperation I yanked off the air cleaner and put my hand on the air pipe and the engine stopped. Investigating the next day and the hydraulic pump had been supplied with the wrong rotation and the engine was running on hydraulic fluid. Since then I discovered that you should never stop an engine with your hand!

Sounds lke you need to ignore videos of the pump and look at videos regarding them governor as that is what controls the pump. Maybe a broken spring in the governor system?

there is a Co in Dunmow Essex who are very good for kubota spares bought a spare lift ump from them sorry I can't find their tel no in name is power??? Sorry I can't help more will have another go tomorrow

Thanks. But it was the linkage bar on the pump. Loose not engaging all the valves. Removed pump. Realigned and tightened screws. Refitted pump. Perfect now.
