Hi all,

I have just removed two spreaders from my mast. One of them is damaged and needs replacing but I am having difficulty identifying the spreader and finding a suitable replacement. I have a small budget so cant consider replacing the whole spreader system.

Here are some photos of the spreaders:

Here is the spreader bracket:

The bracket has internal dimensions of approximately 72mm by 32mm. This offers some play for the current spreaders and a slightly larger spreader profile could be accommodated.

Here is a photo of a speader end:

The spreader aerofoil section has internal dimensions of approximately 58mm by 21mm, and external of 63mm by 26mm (2.5mm wall thickness). The spreaders are approximately 75cm in length, not including the ends.

Anyone out there have a similar spreader (or pair) in good condition that they would be happy to part with? Or maybe a similar pair that might work as a replacement?

Alternatively, if anyone could help me identify the spreader manufacturer it may help me in trying to replace the spreaders.

Cheers!

The mast is an old approx 10m gold proctor but I didn't mention it as I am not sure if these are the original spreaders.

Is this a fractional rig or mast head? or more specifically are the cap shrouds in line abeam the mast or are chain plates aft of abeam the mast. (typically fractional) (swept back spreaders)
If the rig is typical mast head with shrouds in line with the mast then all loads are square on to the mast (in column) so much less concern re free play. ie it is alljust push in to mast.
However in a fractional rig the spreaders push on the cap shrouds to provide pressure to the middle of the mast forward so taking the role of the inner forestay. In this case the spreaders are far more critical and must be robust in the direction forward (ie to hold the swept back dimension with strength) No free play.
I hope this explanation might be of use in Op deciding how to fix spreaders. ol'will

The spreader ,and especially the end piece, look to be Proctor. Proctor are of course now Selden. I wouldn't have thought that you would have any difficulty buying a new spreader from the company or someone like Allspars if someone here doesn't have a spare

If you can’t find a modern equivalent spreader that fits into the mast socket I’d drill out the rivets and remove/replace the socket as well with a new one that you can get a modern spreader for.

It looks in the photo like there might be a bolt that holds the port and starboard spreader sockets together through the mast but you should be able to drill a hole for that through the new socket.

It might be ideal / easier in this case to replace both but as long as the other side isn’t damaged and it’s all visually similar/about the same size it would work I think.

If this is from a well known brand of yacht the owners forum might be a source of info on parts if you local rigger cannot advise. You don’t say vessel make or location but that info might provide offers of help.

Shrouds are in line with the mast.

Exhausting options finding a replacement before considering anything more modern and expensive and that also involves modifying the bracket.

Unfortunately no owner forum. Yacht is a Samphire 26.

I am based on Anglesey.

If you’re in a yard or club a quick wander around will find old masts and rigging in the rough. Often a boat is scrapped but masts, etc is kept “just in case”.
