I've forgotten which way round the paddle wheel on my NASA log goes. There's an arrow on it, but does it point forward to the bows or aft in the direction of the water flow?
The log works by a metal needle in the paddle wheel passing a magnetic sensor in the body of the log. It don't care which way the wheel goes it just counts the number of times the pin passes the sensor in a given time. The arrow helps you ensure the wheel is running parallel with the keel as any misalignment will upset the calibration.
it does not matter. The paddlewheel is symetrical and works the same in both directions. The display works by just counting revolutions (over time, for speed) and does not know which way the paddlewheel is rotating.
It is important to get them the right way round on my B&G system. The paddlewheels are shaped to catch the passing water, and when it was in backwards we didn't appear to go very fast at all!
Same with the VDO sumlog, shaped impellor, but only on the slow speed type. I agree with the rest, non shaped paddle, doesn't matter, shaped, cup pointing forward.
On the same theme - can anyone advise on how to replace the paddle wheel?
Mine has lost one of the paddles and while it may work okay I would rather get it sorted out before the boat goes in next friday.
I've looked at previous posts which indicate that it's rather easy - even afloat, but after a quick look at mine the comments in previous posts don't really make sense.
I seem to have a large rubber flap over the top with a narrow tube protruding through - no nut or fixed cover.
It's a Nasa Duet by the way - any advice gratefuly received
